Huntingdon Mustangs
MURFREESBORO (March 7) — After five months of competitive basketball, the Huntingdon Fillies season came to an end in the quarterfinal round of the TSSAA State Championship for Class 2A. The Huntingdon Fillies (23-5) played their hearts out losing 58-49 against a tough Gibson County Lady Pioneers (30-1) team.
Over the weekend, Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro was the site of some amazing high school girls’ basketball action. Nine of the 32 teams competing for gold were from West Tennessee.
The Huntingdon Fillies punched their ticket to Murfreesboro to play in the State Tournament Class AA quarterfinals with two late-game victorious rallies. Wednesday night the Fillies defeated Cheatham County 67-60 for the Region 6-2AA title. After trailing the Lady Cubs for most of the game, Huntingdon pushed forward in the final minutes to win the region title.
CAMDEN (February 27) — On Tuesday, the Huntingdon Mustangs lost to East Hickman in the region semifinals after leading 57-54 with 11 seconds remaining in regulation time.
McKenzie Rebels
MILAN (March 1) — The 11th annual Milan Lions Club Sight Bowl was held at Milan’s newly renovated stadium on March 1. The scrimmage featured the Milan Bulldogs and the McKenzie Rebels.
HOUSTON COUNTY (February 26, 27) — McKenzie basketball traveled to Houston County in the regional tournament last week looking to extend to their basketball season. The Lady Rebels faced off against the Wayne County Lady Wildcats while the Rebels battled the Frank Hughes Lions. Both McKenzie teams were unsuccessful in pulling off the wins as their season drew to a close.
The Milan Lions Club is hosting the annual ‘Sight Bowl’ this Friday night between the Bulldogs of MHS and the defending Class 1A state runners-up, the McKenzie Rebels. The scrimmage game is at Johnnie Hale Stadium, Milan at 5 p.m.

Just Say No to Vouchers

$144 Million, that’s how much money could/will leave Tennessee public schools and flow into the pockets of private (for-profit) schools within the first year of the school voucher program, the money will “follow the student.” According to Governor Bill Lee’s proposal, the state will pay up to $7,000 annually per student that has the means and desire to attend a private school instead of the public school in their area.

HUNTINGDON (March 13) — Sixty years of private law practice and no intention of retiring. W. Kent Jones has been a central figure in Carroll County, serving clients in all aspects of legal practice. That’s something in which he takes great pride. But one of his favorite joys is talking about his many years of serving as the radio announcer of high school and college sports, a passion that started as a senior at McKenzie High School when he worked as a disc jockey for WHDM radio.
