The American Cancer Society honored

JACKSON (October 26) - Carroll County
received a number of awards during the American Cancer
Society's awards dinner at the J. Walter Barnes
Conference Center. Carroll County walked away with first
in per capita fund raising at $8.27 per capita, fourth
in per capita fund raising in the Mid-South Division,
and second in fund raising per capita in the nation in
the 25,000 to 29,000 population category.

The American Cancer Society of West Tennessee raised
$2.1 million through 21 RFL events. West Tennessee had
12 of the top 20 events, based on per capita fund
raising, in Tennessee. Carroll County was first, Henry
County was seventh, and Weakley County was ninth.
Dr. Tim Tucker of the Carroll South Relay for Life was
honored as the Income Development Volunteer of the Year
for the state of Tennessee and the Mid-South Division.
He was honored for leading the Carroll South Relay for
Life event to the number one spot in the nation in 2005,
number one in the state for the previous seven years. He
was honored as the Income Development Volunteer of the
Year for the state of Tennessee and the Mid-South
Division. He is currently co-chair of the Tennessee
State Leadership Council and continues to be an integral
part of the Carroll South RFL Committee.

Carroll North Relay for Life event received the All
American Relay for Life Award for successfully
implementing the RFL's five Ds: Fundraising Development,
Team Development, Survivor Development, Leadership
Development, and Event Development. Carroll North
increased its survivors by 100 over the last two years
and increased this year's event by over $10,000
integrated Mission Delivery year around. Co-chairman Kay
Wood accepted the award on behalf of the Carroll North
RFL.
The Best Fundraiser Award for the state of Tennessee
went to the Carroll North Cancer Bake Auction, headed by
Mary and Harold Kee of McKenzie. WHDM Radio 1440 AM
provides free airtime for the radio auction, which
raised over $15,000 and raised awareness of the American
Cancer Society and its mission. In making the
presentation, the emcee said, "Only at this bake auction
can you battle the best bidder over the radio waves for
the tastiest pork chops or the famous chocolate turtles
that bring in an amazing $1,000.

Ramona Washburn holds the Lighthouse Award for The
Banner. The staff of Ernie Smothers, Jimmy Gilliam,
Carol Lemonds, Peggy Bennett, Ramona Washburn, Charles
Felts, Carla Crocker, Linda Bolton, Audrey Scruton,
Charlie Massey, Wayne Bannister and Joel Washburn
proudly accept the award.
The McKenzie Banner won the Lighthouse Award:
Best Print Media Supporter for the state of Tennessee
for the small rural market area. The emcee said, "The
McKenzie Banner takes no backseat in putting Relay
in the forefront of their community year round. Whether
it is the personal survivor stories, the community
calendars with Relay fundraisers or the full-color
insert prior to the event, The McKenzie Banner
always shows their support of the American Cancer
Society and its 2015 goals." Joel Washburn, managing
editor, accepted the award.

Receiving the Champion Homes of Henry award
were James McDaniel, Jeremy Farris, Tim
Cook, Becky Hay, and Michelle Beacham. Not
pictured: Heather Williams, Gena Barker,
Melinda Ferguson, Jodie Matthews, Chris
Andrews, Gail Lohin, Debbie Geller, and
Marvin Felts. The team participated in the
Henry County Relay for Life event.

The Banner's preview issue featured stories on
the co-honorary chairman, Eddie Lankford and Gail Robb,
a map of the events, menus and activities of the various
camps, and profiles of two persons who lost their battle
with cancer. Sports Editor Pat Cole and Ruth Ann Kee,
the wife of Kenneth Kee, both died last year from
cancer. Deborah Turner wrote the feature stories, Wayne
Bannister composed the special section, and Turner and
Jimmy Gilliam photographed the Relay event. The
Banner also covered the Carroll South event and
Henry County event.
Manpower of West Tennessee was honored for a gift of
$10,000 or more.
Four teams were honored for raising $10,000 or more.
Honored were First United Methodist Church-Huntingdon
(Carroll South) $10,498; Huntingdon Church of
Christ-Huntingdon (Carroll South), $12,122; Profile
Metal (Carroll North) $18,688; and Huntingdon Middle
School (Carroll South) $23,285.
In Henry County, Champion Homes of Henry raised $10,088;
Henry County Medical Center raised $11,533; Tecumseh
raised $11,404; and Dana (of Paris) raised $21,906. |
