HUNTINGDON (December 20) -- In a possible
cost-cutting move, Carroll County
Commissioners might cut in half the number
of meetings it convenes annually. In a
Thursday meeting, the Rules Committee,
consisting of Marsha Barger, LaRenda
Scarbrough, Jerry White, Randy Long, and
Joel Washburn, voted to send the
recommendation to the full commission in
January. A two-thirds majority is required
to adopt the schedule change.
Commissioners currently meet the second
Monday of each month at a cost of
approximately $2,100 per meeting. Mayor
Kenny McBride said the county can save up to
$12,900 annually by halving the number of
meetings of the Resolutions Committee and
the commission. The Resolutions Committee
currently meets monthly to approve the
monthly commission agenda.
The proposed schedule of meetings is:
February, April, June, August, October, and
December. McBride said special called
meetings can be convened if necessary.
McBride said the Rules Committee is making a
good-faith effort to reduce the costs of
government. In another cost-saving move, the
commission recently eliminated the
requirement for a member of the Sheriff’s
Department to open the monthly commission
meeting, a tradition of the commission, but
not part of the written commission
procedures. McBride said the opening of the
meeting by the sheriff’s department dates
back to a period when the commission was
known as the county court. McBride said the
change “frees up” the deputy to continue
patrolling instead of attending the meeting.
Notaries public may be most affected by the
proposed change. Upon expiration of their
notary commission, renewing notaries would
need to plan ahead for the change in the
commission schedule. |
