Two separate accidents in Huntingdon in recent days
claimed the lives of a Huntingdon woman and Waverly man,
according to investigating officials.
Mary Katherine Taylor, 71, of 1213 Westport Road,
Huntingdon died Friday in an accident that occurred at
2:58 p.m. on Highway 22 South near PJ’s Salvage Grocery.
Robbin Taylor (no relation to first victim), 50, of
Waverly died in an early Sunday morning accident on
Highway 70 West near Sunny Slope Hill just outside
Huntingdon.
According to Joe Parker, director of public safety for
Huntingdon Police Department, Mary Taylor was killed
when she drove her 1990 Pontiac into the side of a 1997
Freightliner tractor-trailer truck, driven by Charles A.
Furnace, 57, of Hazelhurst, Mississippi.
According to the police report, Furnace was traveling
south in the outside lane and Ms. Taylor was traveling
north, when she attempted to turn north through the
center lane divider and drove her vehicle into the rear
wheel of the tractor-trailer. Her vehicle was dragged a
short distance, before the trailer overran the vehicle,
which then spun back out into the median, ejecting the
victim, said Parker. The tractor-trailer traveled
several feet from the point of impact, he added. Owner
of the truck is Coast Carrier of Selmer.
Furnace did not appear to be injured, but was
transported to the local hospital for blood tests, which
is state-mandated in accidents involving a fatality,
officials said.
Carroll County Coroner Steve Cantrell pronounced Ms.
Taylor dead at the scene at 3:23 p.m. (See separate
obituary in this, 2007).
Southbound traffic was diverted to the northbound lane
for approximately two hours following the accident.
Besides Huntingdon Police Department and Carroll County
Coroner, Huntingdon Fire & Rescue responded to the
scene, along with the Tennessee Highway Patrol and
Carroll County Sheriff’s Department.
The second fatal accident was not discovered until
several hours after it occurred, according to
Investigating Trooper Brent Russum. Russom arrived on
the scene at approximately 9 a.m., after a passing
motorist discovered the wreck and notified the Tennessee
Highway Patrol.
According to Russom’s report, Robbin Taylor’s 2003 Dodge
Stratus exited the right side of the roadway and
traveled into a ditch, where it struck a culvert and
became airborne.
The vehicle flipped in mid-air, landed on its hood and
again became airborne before landing right side up
facing west, the trooper said.
Cantrell pronounced Robbin Taylor at the scene at 9:55
a.m., stating he died as the result of enclosed head
trauma and multiple internal chest injuries. However,
Cantrell estimated Taylor’s actual time of death at
approximately 3 a.m. The victim was wearing his safety
belt at the time of the accident.
Assisting THP at the scene was Huntingdon Fire & Rescue
Team, McKenzie Fire & Rescue, Carroll County Rescue
Squad, Carroll County Sheriff’s Department and
Huntingdon Police Department. |

 |
The husband of a former McKenzie woman was one of two
persons killed in a traffic accident Friday, February 2
in Arkansas.
The victim, Eric M. Falk, 35, of Nashville, was the
husband of the former Amanda Brown, daughter of John and
Bonnie Brown of McKenzie. Amanda is a 1996 graduate of
McKenzie High School and a graduate of Murray State
University.
Eric and two other persons were enroute to Waco, Texas
to a church conference when the accident occurred,
according to a family friend.
Falk lost control of the 2004 Mercury van he was driving
just after midnight while traveling east on Interstate
40 near Carlisle, Arkansas.
Also killed was Mary “Emmy” M. Scott, 23, of Madison.
Jase R. Beard, 19, of Abilene, Texas, a passenger in the
vehicle, was injured in the accident and taken to a
local hospital.
According to an Arkansas state police report, the van
veered across the median, colliding with a westbound
tractor-trailer. A second tractor-trailer was also
involved. However, neither of the truck drivers was
injured.
The highway was reportedly covered in ice and snow was
falling at the time of the accident.
Amanda moved to Nashville in 2000 and married Eric in
2004. In 1998, he became a member of Christ Church staff
as a youth minister. In 2006, he was appointed as
missions and evangelism director of the 3,500 member
church, located in South Nashville on Old Hickory Blvd.
According to the family spokesperson, Amanda usually
goes on the trips, but had been persuaded by friends to
go on a cruise. She was to meet them later in Waco.
“She might have been killed as well if she has been with
them,” she said.
Funeral services were Tuesday, February 6 with burial on
Wednesday at Memorial Gardens in Nashville.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Eric
Falk Memorial Fund for the benefit of Amanda Falk, c/o
