Admissions Suspended at Oak Manor Health
Care Center |
| |
McKenzie, Tenn. - Oak Manor Health Care
Center in McKenzie is barred from accepting
any new residents after an investigation by
the Tennessee Department of Health found
several violations.
The apparent catalyst for the investigation,
which was conducted April 4-7, was the
incident on March 31 in which a patient at
the nursing home stole a pickup truck from
the nursing home grounds and led law
enforcement on a three-county chase.
The incident was covered in The Banner. The
60-year-old male patient, with a history of
mental problems and running away from the
facility, stole a truck belonging to the J.R.
Hayes construction company in Paris.
The Hayes company was performing work on a
road project nearby. The patient led police
on a chase from McKenzie to Paris and onto
Paris Landing, over the Ned McWherter Bridge
and into Stewart County.
During the chase, the patient was involved
in two hit-and-run incidents with the stolen
truck. In Paris, he rear-ended another
vehicle on E. Wood St. and he also hit a
vehicle at the Tackle Box convenience store
at 6160 Hwy. 79 N. The patient was charged
with theft of property over $1,000 by the
McKenzie Police.
In its investigation, the Department of
Health found "violations of resident
protection, administration, resident
assessment, performance improvement, nursing
services and social services standards."
In a press release from the Department of
Health, it noted that the nursing home
received six deficiency citations, five in
the immediate jeopardy category. The
immediate jeopardy category means automatic
suspension of admissions. Most of the
citations involve the care of the patient
who stole the vehicle.
In a press release issued Friday, Oak Manor
officials said they are working to improve
the situation at the nursing home.
"Oak Manor is actively addressing the needs
of its residents and will utilize this
experience to improve and enhance the care
received by its residents," the release
said.
The press release quoted Bob Collins, acting
administrator at the nursing home. "Our
employees take their responsibility of
meeting the needs of our residents and their
families very seriously. This is an isolated
incident and we are confident that the steps
we have already taken and ones currently
underway will appropriately address the
state's issues and facility operations will
continue as normal." |
