Candidates Set for August 7 Elections in Carroll County

HUNTINGDON (April 3) – The ballot is set for the August 7 elections in Carroll County. Candidates met the Thursday noon deadline to qualify for the various school board, state, and federal elections.

In McKenzie, only two candidates filed for the three school board positions. Incumbents John Austin (chairman) and Brad Davis each qualified, while incumbent Jill Holland did not seek re-election and no one qualified to seek that seat. MSSD terms are for four years. Davis and Holland both additionally serve on the McKenzie City Council.

Linda Radford, administrator of elections, said the school board will appoint a member to fill the vacancy until the next regular election.

Huntingdon School Board has five candidates seeking two seats. Incumbents Tony Tucker and David Gibson did not seek re-election to the board. Five newcomers – Steven Nolen, Dan Spangle, Paul E. Stokes, Tim Tucker, and Kara Williams are seeking the two at-large seats, which have a six-year term. Tim Tucker is a brother to the retiring Tony Tucker. Tim also serves on the Huntingdon Town Council.

In South Carroll (Clarksburg) School District – Brian E. Crum and Kevin Hart are seeking the Yuma seat currently held by Ronnie Breeden, who is not seeking re-election. Two incumbents are the lone candidates for the other two seats. Marty McKnight is again seeking the Concord seat and Philip E. Moore is again seeking the Westport seat.

West Carroll School Board will see one new member after Donald Cunningham chose not to seek re-election. Greg McClain of Trezevant was the lone candidate to qualify for Cunningham’s seat in the Old Trezevant District. Incumbents are running unopposed for the other two seats. Mike Foster is again seeking the Old County District and Sam Inman, the Old Atwood District.

Hollow Rock-Bruceton Special School District has only incumbents running. Sondra Kee is again seeking to serve the Vale District, Tim Runions for the Hollow Rock District, Brad Hurley for the Bruceton District, and Joseph S. Robinson for the Spanish Grove District. Runions is also the mayor of Hollow Rock.

Carroll County Board of Education has only incumbents seeking the three seats. Harold McLain, Jr. of Huntingdon is seeking re-election to District 1; Tonya Young of Bruceton is seeking re-election to District 2, and Gina Atkins of Huntingdon is seeking re-election to District 3.

All terms on each school board are four years, except Huntingdon, which is six years.

In the Democratic Primary, State Representative Mark Maddox (D, Dresden) is running unopposed for the two-year term for the 76th District. The Dresden Democrat does not have an opponent in the primary or general election.

For the 79th State Representative seat, three persons qualified to fill the position currently held by Chris Crider (R-Milan) who began his tenure as Milan mayor earlier this year. Crider is serving both elective positions. Jim Ryal of Humboldt qualified to run as a Democrat. On the Republican ticket, Curtis Halford of Dyer and Mark Renfroe of Bradford are seeking the office. The district includes all of Gibson County and a portion of Carroll.

In the 75th District State Representative district, James Hart, Republican,
Rubin Adams, Republican, Timothy Wirgau, Republican, and incumbent Willie "Butch" Borchert, Democrat are seeking the position. The district consists of Henry and Benton counties.

State Senator Roy Herron (D-Dresden) is running unopposed for the 24th Tennessee Senate District, representing Henry, Weakley and other counties.

U.S. Congressman John Tanner (D-Union City) is being challenged by James Hart (R-Buchanan). Hart ran two years ago as a Republican until the party denounced him for his racist stands on the issues. Hart often stands on the sidewalks of the Henry County Courthouse. He wears a sandwich board and distributes literature about his candidacy.
