BRUCETON (February 12) — During the town
of Bruceton’s regular monthly meeting, town
mayor Robert T. Keeton III informed of the
towns’ intent to auction the former HIS
Distribution Center located on Rowland Mill
Road on April 30 to satisfy city, county and
school taxes.
Keeton said, “Taxes owed to the town of
Bruceton alone from the Distribution Center
total $200,000. Whether we are able to
collect enough to profit from the building’s
sale or not, we intend to get it (building)
back on the tax rolls.”
He continued, “We will also attempt to have
the former Purity Foods building ready for
sale on that date as well. Purity owes the
town $60,000 in taxes, and the Carroll
County clerk and master will attempt to sale
the building to collect back taxes and
resolve the lawsuit against Purity.”
The board, upon review of the towns’ 2006-07
audit report, withheld action until auditor
Jack Reese of Martin could meet and discuss
findings with board members.
Keeton noted that Reese informed the mayor
prior to the meeting that he would not be
present, but would be present and available
to answer any questions the board might pose
at the March town meeting.
During mayor’s comments, Keeton informed
that the annual Bruceton in May celebration
is scheduled for the second Saturday in May.
In other business, the board, at the motion
of Alderman Steve Pinkston and second by
Vice-Mayor Robert Cole, voted 3-1 to donate
nothing to the Carroll County Sports Hall of
Fame. Alderman Bob Clark cast the lone vote
to donate to the Hall.
Prior to the vote, Clark said, “I know money
is tight right now for our town, but I would
like to give something to the Sports Hall of
Fame. I think we are the only town in the
county that did not donate to them last
year.”
Vice-Mayor Cole responded, “I would like to
give city employees a raise and do a lot of
things, but giving $25 here and $100 there
adds up, and we don’t want to reach a point
where we have to raise taxes in Bruceton.”
He added, “We need to wake up-we are going
the wrong way.”
Pinkston added, “In the two or three years
that the Hall has been in existence, they
have yet to acquire a building. Outside of
Jack E. McGee, I have no idea who the people
are in leadership of the hall and I have
never read or heard anything in regard to
their holding any public meetings.”
He said, “They want money without doing
anything or having anything to show, and I
make the motion that we donate them
nothing.”
Upon approval of January’s financial
statement and minutes by the board, the
meeting was adjourned. |
