Plans Underway for McKenzie’s Freedom Festival July 4

As plans are being finalized for McKenzie’s Freedom Festival on Friday, July 4, everyone is invited to celebrate America’s Independence with a fun-packed family day.

The day’s activities kickoff with the annual VFW Freedom Fest Breakfast. For $6.00, participants can feast on country ham, sausage, gravy, biscuits, eggs, coffee and juice. Tickets can be purchased at the door for the breakfast, which is served from 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Persons are invited to return to the VFW between 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. to pick up a takeout lunch of barbecued chicken, potato salad, baked beans and slaw. Tickets for the lunch are $6.00 and must be purchased in advance from the VFW (352-9976). Tickets can be delivered on request. The VFW is the proud sponsor of two youth baseball teams, Patriot’s Pen Contest for middle school student, Voice of Democracy for high school students and Boys’ State.

The second annual Freedom Festival Ice Cream Contest offers the chance for participants to cool-off by making their favorite ice cream and entering the competition. Prizes are being presented for “Best Vanilla” and the “People’s Choice Award” (favorite flavor). E.W. James is generously donating a list of ingredients for each contestant and Prairie Farms/Turner is donating prizes to the winners. Entry fee is $10.00 and forms can be picked up at McKenzie City Hall or Edward Jones.

Morning Glory Garden Club is encouraging all businesses to decorate their windows in their best patriotic displays to enter the annual Freedom Festival Window Contest. Citizens are also encouraged to showcase their yards in patriotic array for Yard of the Month. Judging is July 1 and the winners will be announced at McKenzie Recreation Park on July 4.

At 6:00 p.m., everyone is invited to settle down in their lawn chair and enjoy the Freedom Festival Parade, or better yet, be a part of the parade, said festival planners. The parade route begins on Stonewall Street at First Baptist Church parking lot and continues down Stonewall to Anderson Drive, where participants turn right and continue into the park to the tennis courts. The patriotic parade is being led by the National Guard’s Color Guard. The parade committee welcomes floats, cars, bikes, power wheels, walkers and horses. Power wheel riders enter the parade at the McKenzie Middle School. First and second place ribbons are being awarded in each category for the best decorated entries. For parade information, call 352-9218.

Family and friends are invited to the park where more fun and activities are available. Festival-goers are invited to splash and stay cool on the Dolphin Water Slide, try their agility on the National Guard’s Climbing Wall, and bounce on the Giant Jumping Bag. Booths will have crafts, jewelry, books, music, games and sand art.

Cub Scout Troop 78 and the David Johnson Chorus are selling delicious hot dogs, hamburgers and cold drinks and Webb High School Alumni is selling barbecue plates, cooked by Police Chief Harry Cooper.

Settle in for a wide range of local talent with Kelsey Cooper singing the National Anthem for opening ceremonies. The Ryan Larkin Contemporary Gospel Band, Derrick McDaniel singing southern gospel, Shelby Trevathan, Bethany Ellis, Alexis Lane and the Friendly Church of God in Christ Dance Troupe are a few of the talented artists scheduled to perform. The nationally renowned group, The David Johnson Chorus, which was featured in Southern Living Magazine, is performing their patriotic program with a mix of old-time favorites. A spectacular finale follows with the playing of Taps and a 21-gun salute, which introduces a breathtaking fireworks show.

Transportation from Como Street and Liberty Lane to the park and back is being provided for seniors and disabled citizens.
