McKenzie Freedom Festival Includes Many Activities

Plans for the McKenzie's Freedom Festival are getting bigger and better, according to event organizers. McKenzie's showcase event is July 4th and celebrates the greatness of this country. The day's events include: food, a parade, ice cream, and music; all culminating with a spectacular fireworks show.

Activities Include:

  • The second annual Homemade Ice Cream Contest at the recreation park offers the chance for participants and spectators to cool off. One lucky participant wins a year's supply of ice cream, with cash prizes awarded in the amounts of $100.00 for first place and $50.00 for second place. The top three winners receive gift baskets from Prairie Farms/Turner. Contestants can enter either the "Best Vanilla" or "Favorite Flavor" category. The entrance fee is $10.00, with each contestant receiving a voucher for half gallon of milk, two bags of ice and a box of salt donated by E.W. James Supermarket. Entry forms and vouchers are available at McKenzie City Hall, Dairy Queen, Edward Jones and Sonic. For only $1.00, taste testers are allowed to sample each ice cream entry and judge the People's Choice.

  • A flag-waving parade begins at 6:00 p.m. In addition to a host of patriotic characters from the past, walkers and cyclists, along with floats, trucks and cars may enter. The parade begins on Stonewall Street at First Baptist Church and continues to Anderson Drive, with units turning right into the park. Children's power wheel participants are asked to enter the parade at the McKenzie Middle School. Ribbons are awarded in each category. For additional information, call 352-9218.

  • The VFW Freedom Fest Breakfast begins at 6:00 a.m. and continues until 10:00 at the post home. For a cost of $6.00, diners can feast on country ham, sausage, gravy, biscuits, eggs, coffee and juice. Tickets for breakfast can be purchased at the door. Everyone is invited to return to the VFW between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for a take-out lunch of barbequed chicken, potato salad, baked beans and slaw. Tickets for the lunch are $6.00 and must be purchased in advance from the VFW (352-9976). Tickets can be delivered upon request.

  • Save room for a picnic at the park. While being entertained by the outstanding David Johnson Chorus and other talented artists, such as the Ryan Larkin contemporary gospel band, Derrick McDaniel singing southern gospel, Bethany Ellis, Alexis Lane, Shelby Trevathan and Friendly Church of God in Christ dance troop, spectators can savor a delicious barbeque plate dinner prepared by the Webb Alumni Association, try grilled hamburgers and hot dogs cooked by Cub Scout Pack 78 and the David Johnson Chorus, or enjoy mouth-watering rib eye steak or fried baloney sandwiches grilled by the McKenzie Touchdown Club. For dessert, funnel cakes, snow cones, and Hawaiian shaved ice are all available.

  • Family and friends are invited to cruise the craft booths, or cool off on the Dolphin Water Slide, before testing one’s agility on the rock climbing wall or bouncing on the giant jumping bag.

  • A playing of TAPS and a 21-gun salute signals the grand fireworks extravaganza beginning at approximately 9:00 p.m.

Vans are available to transport seniors and disabled citizens to the park between 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Pick-up points are Como Street and Liberty Lane. Return transportation is available after the fireworks. Handicapped parking is available in the parking lot beneath the softball field at the top of Liberty Lane.
