Henry Man Survives Car-Train Collision

Mark Smith survived after the 2000 Chrysler LHS he was driving was struck in the driver’s side by a train.

MCKENZIE, Tenn. — A Henry man is OK after he drove a car into the path of an eastbound train at approximately 3:00 Saturday afternoon. Chief Harry Cooper said the car was driven by Mark Smith, 41, of Meadow Road, Henry.

The train, which was engineered by Perry Cook of Camden, was traveling toward Huntingdon, said the chief.

Witnesses told officers Smith drove across the tracks at Walnut and Stonewall crossing prior to being hit at the second location. He crossed the tracks despite warnings and then headed to the Main Street and Walnut Street crossing and again turned in front of the train at Main Street.

Smith was driving a 2000 Chrysler LHS, owned by Russell Butler of Old McKenzie Road, McKenzie. The vehicle was heavily damaged, said Chief Cooper.

The slow-moving train struck the driver’s side of the car and pushed it approximately 400 feet along the tracks before the vehicle cleared the track. Smith walked away from the incident, said one person on the scene.

D&D Service Center was called to retrieve the vehicle from the track side. A member of the wrecker crew was able to start the vehicle and drive it to the roadway to be loaded on the wrecker.

Cooper stated the incident remains under investigation.
