Seasonal Changes Force Jobless Rates Up in Tri-counties

By Linda Bolton

Unemployment rates in Carroll, Henry and Weakley counties increased during the January reporting period primarily because of seasonal declines, according to latest statistics released by the Tennessee Department of Employment Security.

Carroll County jobless rate increased to 8.0 percent, up from the December rate of 7.2. From a labor force of 13,880, a total of 12,770 were employed, leaving 1,110 unemployed.

Judith Bradberry, labor market analyst for the state noted Carroll County experienced slight declines in construction, manufacturing, TTU (trade, transportation and utilities).

Henry County’s unemployment rate was 7.6 percent, which is an increase from the December rate of 6.6 percent. From a labor force of 14,070, a total of 13,000 were employed, leaving 1,070 unemployed.

Henry County experienced decreases in good producing sectors, both construction and manufacturing, stated Ms. Bradberry.

Weakley County’s January unemployment rate was 6.1 percent, up from the December rate of 6.0 percent. That county reported slight seasonal changes in TTU (trade, transportation and utilities.

From an available labor force of 15,800 in Weakley County, 14,830 were employed, leaving 970 without jobs.

Tennessee’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January 2008 was released last week at 4.9 percent, 0.1 percent lower than the revised December 2007 rate of 5.0 percent. The United States unemployment rate for the month of January was also 4.9 percent.

County non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rates for January 2008, show that 89 counties increased. The rate decreased in four counties and remained the same in two counties. County unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted and therefore reflect seasonal expansions and layoffs that occur during the year. The state and U.S. unemployment rates are seasonally adjusted to eliminate normal seasonal fluctuations and to indicate a more accurate measurement of actual economic change.
