Trezevant Takes Bids on New Roof for City
Hall |

TREZEVANT, Tenn. — Trezevant’s city council
met Tuesday evening for a productive
session. First on the agenda was the roof of
City Hall, which is in a state of disrepair.
Bids for membrane style roofs were looked at
from Stambaugh Roofing of McKenzie and Reese
Roofing of Jackson. Several other estimates
were tentative at the time of the meeting;
therefore no official action was taken on
the issue. The board agreed that those other
bids should be looked at before proceeding
with the project. Mayor David Bryant
stressed that the roof is the number one
priority for the board and that it simply
can’t wait another month. Any insured
company or contractor will be considered and
after all estimates have been received,
construction will begin as soon as possible.
Other unfinished business included last
month’s motion to accept B&E Electronics’
bid to outfit the new police cruiser. The
motion to accept the bid was originally made
with the condition if funds were available.
Since last month’s meeting, it has been
determined that current funds simply aren’t
sufficient for a total outfitting all at
once. Mayor Bryant said that a cage for
between the driver and prisoner, light bars,
and other assorted parts have been found at
prices within his spending power and have
been purchased already, saving costs of
about $2,000. The most needed addition for
the vehicle is a new camera recording
system. It was decided that though the
current system works with analog tape, a new
digital system would be best to keep
technologically current. Alderman Lloyd
Bateman was unanimously supported in
rescinding last month’s motion accepting the
bid. He then made a motion to allow Mayor
Bryant and Police Liaison Bobby Blaylock the
authority to purchase what equipment is
needed for the police car at this time. All
were in favor and the motion was approved.
New business included an annual safety audit
by Tennessee Municipal League Insurance. The
survey addressed several issues such as
areas of sidewalk on West Main, Bryant and
Crooked streets that pose trip and fall
hazards to civilians, speed breakers that
need reflective painting for better
visibility or removal and city employees not
being given driving tests once every three
years. Also addressed in the survey was that
Trezevant is allowing city-owned fields to
be used by third parties for organized
league play and tournaments without special
procedures, which is a liability issue.
Beyond administrative action between the
city and any third parties with insurance,
this basically means Little League and any
other third parties that use the fields will
have to present parent-signed waivers
releasing the city of responsibility of any
injuries incurred on the field. Mayor Bryant
said all of the recommendations by TML would
be resolved properly.
Grant money in the amount of $3,800 has been
received from the state tax surplus. Citizen
James Paul Baxter has requested that the
money be spent towards repairing the senior
citizens community center. Repairs or
upgrades needed include a partially rotted
overhang on the front of the building, locks
on storage cabinets, new ceiling fans, a
shade on the front window, and if feasible
some paint touch-up. Alderman Bobby Blaylock
made a motion that the board use the grant
towards repair of the community center and
none were opposed. A grant of $1,200 for the
city field has also been received and
Christy Giles for Little League will assist
with how the grant will be used in upkeep
and maintenance for the field.
Other new business included a $100 donation
for Project Graduation, which was approved
unanimously. Charles Foster of the Street
Department has requested asphalt for
patching holes along Park Street and around
the H.I.S. building. The board approved to
purchase up to $1,000 worth of asphalt.
Alderman Bobby Blaylock gave the February
activity report, which included; three EMS
assists, two assists for other departments,
two traffic arrests, two aggravated child
abuse/neglect, one DUI, one alarm response,
one domestic arrest, one abandoned vehicle,
one theft of property, one suicide and nine
other calls of service. Twenty-four total
calls of service were reported.
The city fire department in February had one
call for a car fire, responded to a mutual
aid call in McKenzie, ran 21 drills and had
two hours of maintenance and cleanup.
Payroll for the month was $237.34.
Reports of delinquent water bills and taxes
as of March 11th were as follows: water
bills, $695.70; four disconnects; two
reconnects; property taxes, $2,904.91.
Bank balances were as follows; General Fund,
$54,437.03; Sanitation, $7,573.69; StreetAid,
$15,810.74; Drug Fund, $4,438.49; Water
Fund, $12,550.40; Water Reserve Fund,
$51,223.17. |
