Teague Murder Trial Begins Monday; School Rape Suspect Arraigned

By Linda Bolton

A second murder trial for Dale Maurice Teague will begin Monday, May 19, according to District Attorney Hansel McCadams. Teague appeared before Judge Donald Parish in Carroll County Circuit Court Monday, when a new trial date was set.

During next week’s trial by jury, Teague will face a second degree murder charge, according to the district attorney.

During a March trial, a circuit court jury could not reach a unanimous decision on a conviction of first degree murder. They determined Teague was not guilty of premeditated murder, but could not agree on lesser charges of second degree murder, manslaughter, or reckless homicide, causing the judge to declare a mistrial.

The jury declared they were hopelessly deadlocked after deliberating nine hours. Representing Teague was Billy Roe, assistant public defender. Steve Jackson and Ed McDaniel represented the State of Tennessee.

The now 20-year-old McKenzie man is charged with fatally shooting Dwight Anthony Jones, age 41, on April 12, 2007, at 319 Walnut Circle, an apartment rented by his mother, Karen Cunningham in the McKenzie Housing Authority.

Christopher Anthony Johnson, 42, of McKenzie was also arraigned in circuit court Monday on a rape charge.

Johnson, a Huntingdon High School custodian and church pastor, was arrested March 4 following an investigation by Lt. Johnny Hill and Patrolman Joey Hedge of the Huntingdon Police Department. The defendant has retained Jeff Mueller of Jackson to represent him in the rape case.

Johnson, who is free on $50,000 bond, was placed on a scheduling order for motions on June 9, said the district attorney. He will return at a later date for appearance day, when a trial date will be set.

He serves as pastor of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church in Greenfield.

He was contracted through the Knoxville-based GCA Services Group to work as a custodian at the school. He is reportedly on administrative leave without pay, pending the outcome of the case.
