Steele Employee Killed In Freak Accident

By Shannon McFarlin
smcfarlin@henrycountian.com

Paris, Tenn. - An employee of Steele Monuments in Paris was killed Monday while installing a monument at Richlawn Cemetery in Waverly.

Jonathan Laman, 30, of Huntingdon was killed around noon when the monument he was helping to install hit him in the head. Laman is a supervisor at Steele's.

Capt. Grant Gillespie said this morning Laman was helping to unload the stainless steel monument when the weight shifted "pinning him to the curb and crushing him."

Gillespie said Laman was working with another Steele employee, Tony Holland of Stewart County, and an employee from Richlawn Cemetery, Jess Bowen.

"He died instantly," Gillespie said. "It was a traumatic injury, a real tragic occurrence."

Gillespie said Holland and Bowen "were tore all to pieces about it, but there was nothing they could do to prevent it. It was just a terrible accident."

Win Anderson, Editor of The News-Democrat in Waverly said Laman was transported to the Three Rivers Hospital by a police cruiser because the ambulance service did not arrive.

"The ambulance was called for--the Empact Medical Service ambulance--but it did not arrive in time," Anderson said. "Actually, it didn't arrive at all, so they put him in the police cruiser and took him to the hospital."

Laman was officially pronounced dead at Three Rivers Hospital, Gillespie said.

Don Steele, owner of Steele Monuments and Steele Restaurant Equipment Sales, 817 E. Wood St., was emotional this morning as he spoke of the accident.

"In 26 years in business," Steele said, "there's been nothing more than cuts and bruises. This is just a horrible thing."

Dilday Funeral Home in Huntingdon has charge of funeral arrangements, which are incomplete.
