Water Leak Cancels Classes at McKenzie Elementary Friday

A sign in the driveway at McKenzie Elementary last week alerted parents to the one-day closing.

Students at McKenzie Elementary received a holiday from school Friday, after an outside leak necessitated that water be turned off at the building.

Principal Richard Davy stated that a water main junction at the back of the school near the board office incurred a leak Thursday morning. As repairs were underway, the main broke and water had to be turned off.

School officials opened the concession stand at the football stadium across the street from the elementary school to allow students and faculty access to restroom facilities for the remainder of the day Thursday. There are 580 students enrolled at the elementary school.

A decision was made to cancel classes Friday at the school, because school officials were unsure at that time when the leak would be repaired and they wanted to provide parents as much notice as possible.

The leak was repaired late Thursday and the system was flushed on Friday to ensure the water was clear, said Davy.

Superintendent Jim Ward said it is his intent at this time not to make up the lost day, since the remainder of the school system was open. However, he is looking into the matter.

“I’m very appreciative of Mr. Davy and his staff during this situation, and especially the ladies in the lunch room, who provided the meal on Thursday.

“You find our how good you are when you have an adverse situation,” he added.

Principal Davy similarly expressed thanks to local plumber Donald Tolbert and school maintenance personnel Kenny Graves and Ted Mayberry for their efficient services.
