ANN GALLOWAY ANKENEY
VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA: Ann Galloway "Anniebug"
Ankeney, 72, of the 1300 block of Willowood
Lane, died December 13 after a long battle
with Alzheimer's. A memorial service was
held at Wycliffe Presbyterian Church in
Virginia Beach on January 6 at 4 p.m.
Mrs. Ankeney was born in McKenzie to the
late Dr. Coke O. Galloway and Elizabeth F.
"Mimi" Edmundson.
She served in the U.S. Marine Corp during
the Cold War prior to receiving her
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Bethel
College in 1966. She later obtained her
Master's Degree from ODU in 1975. She
retired from the Norfolk Public School
System in July of 1997 after teaching for
thirty-two years. She and her husband met at
the end of January of 1957, got married in
March the same year and they just celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary this past
March. She was a Brownie Scout leader and
Sunday School teacher. Besides her parents,
she was preceded in death by one sister,
Gloria "Doty" (Galloway) McCullar of
McKenzie.
Survivors include: her husband, Richard
Clayton Ankeney of Virginia Beach; four
daughters, Beverly (Barry) Boyce of Newport
News, Julia (Lenny) Emmons of Middleburg,
Florida, Elizabeth (Douglas) Hershberger and
Rebecca (Raymond Jr.) Gwin, both of Virginia
Beach; two sisters, Eloise Sharpe of
Jackson, Mississippi and Janice Wall of
Kingston; one brother, Frank Galloway of
Franklin; and five grandchildren, Brandon
(Cindy) Upright of Suffolk, Virginia, Molly
Jordan of Raleigh, North Carolina, Amanda (Vinny)
Sellers of San Antonio, Texas, Benjamin
Emmons of Middleburg, Florida, and Elijah
Peyton Gwin of Virginia Beach.
At her request, her body has been donated to
Eastern Virginia Medical School for
scientific research.

1916-2008
TREZEVANT: Kathleen Whitmore, 91, died
Friday, January 4, at McKenzie Health Care
Center. Funeral services were Sunday,
January 6, at 2:00 p.m. at Brummitt Funeral
Home in Trezevant with burial in Pilgrim's
Rest Cemetery in McKenzie.
Mrs. Whitmore was born September 20, 1916 in
Ecru, Mississippi to the late John and Jenny
Hubanks Stansell. She was a retired factory
worker. She was preceded in death by a son,
James Stansell.
Survivors include: one daughter, Nancy
(Richard) Pinson of McKenzie; one sister,
Laverne Hill of Bethel Springs; four
grandchildren, Tim (Rhonda) Stansell,
Kimberly McCartney, Jason (Jennifer) Pinson,
and Eric (Wendy) Pinson; seven
great-grandchildren, two
step-great-grandchildren and one
great-great-granddaughter.
HENRY LEE HOLLINGSWORTH, JR.
1941-2008
HOLLOW ROCK: Henry Lee Hollingsworth, Jr.,
66, died Wednesday, January 2, at his
residence. Funeral services were Friday,
January 4, at 2:00 p.m. in the Stockdale-Malin
Chapel in Camden with Bro. Jerry
Hollingsworth and Bro. Larry Hollingsworth
officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Carmel
Cemetery.
Mr. Hollingsworth was born January 22, 1941
in Camden to the late Henry Lee and Verlie
Bell Hollingsworth. He was a Baptist
minister, member of Galilee General Baptist
Church and a logger. Besides his parents, he
was preceded in death by two sisters, Linda
Frazee and Alice Rogers; and two brothers,
Thomas Lee and David Hollingsworth.
Survivors include: his wife, Nellie
Christine Rogers Hollingsworth; three
daughters, Janie Ellis of McKenzie, Sandra
Ray and Peggy Baker, both of Bruceton; two
sons, Mark and Paul Hollingsworth of
Bruceton; four sisters, JoAnne Lowe, Carolyn
McEwen, and Vicky Rogers, all of Bruceton
and Mary Ann Taylor of Parsons; four
brothers, Bobby, Leslie, and James
Hollingsworth of Bruceton, and L. C.
Hollingsworth of Camden; and fourteen
grandchildren.
JERRY NEIL WARD
1929-2008
ATWOOD: Jerry Neil Ward, 78, died Thursday,
January 3, at McKenzie Healthcare. Funeral
services were Saturday, January 5, at 11:00
a.m. at Bodkin Funeral Home in Milan with
Rev. Tony Lathand officiating. Burial
followed in House Cemetery.
Mr. Ward was born November 10, 1929 in
Watertown to the late Clayton and Beulah
Blythe Ward. He was a retired commercial
painter and served in the United States Army
during the Korean conflict. He attended
House Baptist Church and was a member of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4780. Besides
his parents, he was preceded in death by one
son, Don Randall (Josh) Ward; two brothers,
Gary Ward and Robert Hugh Ward; and one
sister, Nina Ward.
Survivors include: his wife, Attie Cathleen
Smith Ward of Atwood; one son, Anthony Ward
of Sugar Tree; five grandchildren, nine
great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.
GORDON LEE "COTTON" FIELDS
1936 - 2008
BRUCETON: Gordon Lee "Cotton" Fields, 71,
died Tuesday, January 1, at Regional
Hospital in Jackson. Funeral services were
Thursday, January 3, at 2:00 p.m. at Chase
Funeral Home with Bro. Larry Hollingsworth
officiating. Burial followed at Barren
Springs Cemetery.
Mr. Fields was born September 12, 1936 in
Bruceton to the late Oliver "Bunk" Fields
and Vela (Pruitt) Fields. He retired after
30 years of work as a steel worker for LTV
Steel, formerly Youngstown Steel Mill.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in
death by two brothers, Bobby Fields and
James Fields.
Survivors include: his wife of 35 years,
Willie (Gregory) Fields of Bruceton; two
sons, Jeff Fields and Timothy Fields, both
of Bruceton; three sisters, Dorothy Norden
of Griffith, Indiana, Marjorie (Buddy)
Hutchens and Elizabeth (Robert) Pinson, both
of McKenzie; five stepchildren, Robert
DeJarnette, Roberta May, Theresa Wilkerson,
Cherri Church, all of Kentucky, and James
DeJarnette of Bruceton; one grandson, one
great-grandson, eleven step-grandchildren
and six step-great-grandchildren.
BETTY LOU McKENZIE
1925-2008
SPRINGVILLE: Betty Lou McKenzie, 82, died
Tuesday, January 1, at Jackson-Madison
County General Hospital. Funeral services
were Saturday, January 5, at 10:00 a.m. in
the Chapel of Stockdale-Malin Funeral Home
of Big Sandy. Burial followed in McRae
Chapel Cemetery.
Mrs. McKenzie was born February 6, 1925 in
West Lebanon, Indiana to the late Forrest
Owens and Irene Shaughnessy Owens. She was a
retired machine operator. Besides her
parents, she was preceded in death by her
first husband, Marvin Watson; one sister,
and three brothers.
Survivors include: her husband, Wilton
McKenzie; five daughters, Faye (Robert)
Warren of McKenzie, Barbara Ward of
Mansfield, Cheryl (J.R.) Tillman of Gleason,
Diana (Rick) Jackson of Paris, and Karen
Layton of Indianapolis, Indiana; five sons,
Richard (Mary Lou) Watson of Mansfield,
Marvin (Betty) Watson of McKenzie, Ronnie

JAMES K. HOLMES
1930-2007
HENRY: James K. Holmes, 77, died Monday,
December 31, at his residence. Funeral
services with military honors were Thursday,
January 3, at 2 p.m. at Ridgeway Funeral
Home with Rev. Alan Trull and Rev. Carol R.
Peppler officiating. Burial followed in
Henry City Cemetery.
Mr. Holmes was born June 10, 1930 in
Booneville, Mississippi to the late James
Vester Holmes and Audry Virginia Reece
Holmes. He was a retired high school
principal and military veteran, member of
Palestine United Methodist Church, certified
flight instructor and an avid amateur radio
operator.
Survivors include: his wife, Imogene Moody
Holmes; one son, Ken Holmes, Jr. of
Petersburg, Kentucky; two sisters, Jenny
(Harry) Graham of Memphis and Dot (Ray)
Noles of Jonesboro, Arkansas; two
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
MARY LILLIAN TRUE
1923-2008
GOODLETTSVILLE: Mary Lillian True, 84, died
Saturday, January 5, at Hendersonville
Medical Center. Funeral services were
Tuesday, January 8, at 10 a.m. at McKenzie
Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Prosser, Rev.
Tony Janner, and Rev. Ken Castleberry
officiating. Burial followed at East View
Cemetery in Union City.
Mrs. True was born June 22, 1923 in Troy to
the late Fred Clarence and Susan Ethel
Griffin Wilkerson. She was a retired church
secretary for McKenzie First Cumberland
Presbyterian Church where she was a member
and a former educator. Besides her parents,
she was preceded in death by her husband,
J.C. True, and one daughter, Pam Campbell.
Survivors include: one daughter, Susan
Castleberry of Goodlettsville; one brother,
H. Lloyd Wilkerson of Greensboro, North
Carolina; and three grandchildren.

JAMES WILLIAM BRUCE
GLEASON: James William Bruce, 67, died
Wednesday, January 2, at Jackson Madison
County Hospital. He was buried at Oddfellows
Cemetery in Madisonville, Kentucky.
Mr. Bruce was born December 10, 1940 in
Madisonville, Kentucky to the late Richard
Bruce and Anna Mae Johnson.
He was a trucker for Delta Plastic.
Survivors include: three sons, James W.
Bruce, Jr. of Sharon, William Bruce of
Evansville, Indiana, and Jimmy Bruce of
Cadiz, Kentucky; two daughters, Gloria Goode
of Gleason, and Anna Williams of Evansville,
Indiana; and three sisters, Janon Walker of
Evansville, Indiana, Sue Taylor of New
Burge, Indiana, and Anna Wigton.
WADE EVELYN BRUSH
1916-2007
JACKSON: Wade Evelyn Brush, 91, formerly of
McKenzie, died Sunday, January 6, at
Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
Funeral services are Wednesday, January 9,
at 2 p.m. at McKenzie Funeral Home with
James Watford officiating. Burial will
follow at Shiloh Cemetery.
Mrs. Brush was born June 21, 1916 in
McKenzie to the late Wade McCadams and Eva
Laster McCadams. She was a member of the
Methodist Church. Besides her parents, she
was preceded in death by her husband, Lawton
Brush; and one brother, Reuben Earl McCadams.
Survivors include: one son, Ted Mack (Carol)
Brush of Jackson; one sister, Betty Ann
Hilliard of McKenzie; one brother, Billy Joe
McCadams of McKenzie; and two grandchildren,
Brent Brush and Katie Brush.
WILLIAM THOMAS SYLVIS
1944-2007
MCKENZIE: William Thomas Sylvis, 63, died
Friday, January 4, at Oak Manor Health Care
Center in McKenzie. The family has chosen
cremation and there will be no services
conducted.
Mr. Sylvis was born September 10, 1944 in
Dickson County to the late Leon Thomas and
Emma Dell Dickerson Sylvis. He was a retired
police officer for Joliet, Illinois and also
an Air Force veteran. Besides his parents,
he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce
Sylvis.
Survivors include: his wife, Karen Y. Sylvis
of Buchanan; four stepdaughters, Jennifer
(Kyle) Dunlap of Gleason, Angie (Bob)
Cottrell of Joliet, Illinois, Kathy Tyson of
Alabama and Kim Tyson of Murfreesboro; one
son, Darren Lynn Sylvis of Bruceton; one
stepson, Blake Hunt of Buchanan; one sister,
Sarah (William) Stone of McKenzie; eight
step-grandchildren, Stephanie, Nick, Haven,
Shaun, Majesta, Victoria, Dillon and Dalton;
one niece, Tammy (Chris) Poole; one nephew,
Bill (Kim) Moore; and great-nieces and
nephews.

MARY RELMA PRINCE
1908-2008
MCKENZIE: Mary Relma Prince, 99, died
Monday, January 7, at McKenzie Healthcare.
Funeral services are Thursday, January 10,

officiating. Burial will follow in Little
Zion Cemetery in Palmersville.
Mrs. Prince was born September 13, 1908 in
Cottage Grove to the late George William
"Bill" Parrish and Sarah Elizabeth Henderson
Parrish. She was a homemaker who farmed with
her husband for many years. Besides her
parents, she was preceded in death by two
brothers, H.B. Parrish and Graden Parrish.
Survivors include: two daughters, Betty
Barker Berry of Paris and Mary B. Glasgow of
Huntsville, Alabama; two sons, Claude Miller
(Ann) Prince of McKenzie and Donald W.
(Anita) Prince of Columbia; 10
grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and
10 great-great-grandchildren.
