Notes From McKenzie High School

By Terry Howell
Principal, McKenzie High School

Graduation for the 99th graduating class of McKenzie High School and the 84th of the McKenzie Special School District will be this Sunday, May 18, at 3:00 P.M. Eighty-eight (88) seniors make up the list of candidates for graduation pending the successful completion of all academic and attendance requirements. The commencement exercises will be in the gymnasium; the doors will open for seating at 2:00 P.M. Graduation exercises with the tradition of cap and gown date back to English universities in the Middle Ages. They are ceremonies that while joyful are also dignified and somber. We ask that all people that attend honor our graduation act in an appropriate way by having classy, restrained behavior. The Class of 2008 deserves that.

The soccer team ended its season last Monday as they did battle with the top-seed in the district, the USJ Bruins. Although the Rebels lost 7-0, they played well against the well-oiled home team. Damon Hardy had 16 saves and the defense, while pressured the whole game, played well despite the school. The young Rebels ended the year with one win, ten losses, and one tie. They will lose the services of seniors Keenan Bannon, Chloe Cunningham, Damon Hardy, and Joel Oyebi. With a roster full of underclassmen, the soccer team looks to improve next year.

The softball team defeated Big Sandy in the First Round of the district tournament by a score of 15-0. The three-inning, mercy-rule game saw the Lady Rebels score heavily in the first two innings and then push across the 15th run in the third inning to end the game. Evan Hudgins was 2-3 in the game and Hannah Potts had a triple to end the game. Sarah Owen and Crystal Doub combined for the shut-out win as the Lady Rebels improved to 11-15 with the win. On Tuesday the Lady Rebels played intra-county nemesis Bruceton for a chance to advance to the championship in the winners’ bracket. The Lady Rebels played well against the Lady Tigers, a team that had defeated them twice during the regular season, and prevailed 4-2 in nine innings. Crystal Doub picked up the win as she and Sarah Owen both did an outstanding job on the mound. Mignon Salameh, Hannah Potts, Kenisha Williams, Kate Barcroft, Kelsey Poore, and Trevatia Bowden all had key hits for the Lady Rebels. On Wednesday, the Lady Rebels had the dubious task of facing the top-seeded Fillies of Huntingdon. Despite the strong pitching of freshman Crystal Doub, the Lady Rebels fell 4-0. The Lady Rebels could not hit Huntingdon ace Brooke Thomas. The four runs were more than enough needed to secure the win. In the second game, the Lady Rebels had an elimination match with the Clarksburg Lady Rockets. After several errors, the Lady Rebels gave the visiting team a comfortable 4-0 lead. The wheels fell off the wagon for the Lady Rockets, however, after an unfortunate injury to their pitcher. The Lady Rebels began a run-fest as they rushed to a 17-5 win and secured a region appearance. On Thursday the Lady Rebels faced the Fillies of Huntingdon for the 4th time with unfortunately the same results. The Fillies soundly defeated the Lady Rebels 10-0 to take the district championship. The Lady Rebels traveled to South Fulton on Monday to battle the Lady Red Devils in the 1st Round of the region. The Lady Rebels named to the all district team were Tenisha Carey, Trevatia Bowden, Sarah Owen, and Kelsie Poore. Honorable mention were Colby Prosser and Crystal Doub.

The baseball team lost in the championship round of the winners’ bracket against Huntingdon on Tuesday by a score of 6-4. The Rebels made several fielding and base-running mistakes to stake the Mustangs to a 6-1 lead. They did battle back in the late innings to make the score close, but the Mustangs posted the 6-4 win. Clint Kee pitched for the Rebels and battled hard all game, but key hitting and untimely mistakes hurt the Rebels. On Tuesday, the Rebels played an elimination game against the Bruceton Tigers. Parker Jones was up to the challenge as the Rebels eliminated the Tigers 6-1. Derek Carr drove the nail in the coffin with a 3-run homerun. Parker Jones pitched well in striking out 11 and keeping the Tigers off balance with a wicked curve ball. Parker also provided the other three rbi’s with two timely hits. The win insured a region game for the Rebels. On Wednesday, the Rebels again played Huntingdon for the 4th time this year. The Rebels could not avoid mistakes and could not hit the Huntingdon pitcher losing 8-1. They played Monday against Union City in the First Round of the region. Named to the all-district baseball team were Drew Brown, Derek Carr, Parker Jones, Nick Chappell, and Clint Kee. The Rebels now sport a 23-8 record.

Upcoming dates of interest for students in 9-11 are as follows: On Wednesday, May 21, students will take their First and Fourth Block exams. On Thursday, May 22, students will take their Second and Third Block tests. Thursday, May 22 will be a half-day for students. On Friday, May 23, students may pick up their report cards from 10:30 – 12:00 P.M. Students may also leave a stamped, self-addressed envelope for us to send the report card. I will be here throughout most of the summer for those who fail to get their report card.

This summer we will offer credit recovery for those students who fail courses in English, math, social studies, and science. Students who earn between a 60-69 in a course and have a faculty recommendation may get to do this internet-based, computer-generated program to earn a 70 and receive a credit. We will attach information on report cards for those students who qualify for credit recovery. Dates that students will need to be here during the summer will be included in the information packet. There is no charge for this unique program that will help to keep students on track to graduate. The program will be administered by a certified staff member.
