Notes From the High School |
| |
By Terry Howell
McKenzie High School Principal |
|
| |
Last Monday the Lady Rebels and Rebels
hosted several schools at Carroll Lake Golf
Course. The Lady Rebels defeated Martin
Westview by 12 shots to improve their record
to 5-3. Mary Nethaway had a 48 to lead the
home school. She had support from Ashley
Balius with 51, Phoebe Cunningham with a 59,
and Megan Hickman with a 67. The boys' team
gained three wins over Martin Westview,
Riverside, and Gleason to run their record
to 13-3. Tyler Bruce led the way with a 40.
The team shot consistent scores as Tyler
Holt (41), Alex Rider (42), Luke Anderson
(43), and Jackson Brooks (44) all helped the
Rebels in the win.
On Wednesday of this week the juniors will
have their second turn in for the magazine
sales. On this first turn in, the class had
gross sales of $854.95. Their stated goal is
$12,000. They will need to work doubly hard
to reach this lofty goal. I ask that the
public buy subscriptions or get renewals
from these juniors to help them fund the
cost of the prom and pay for senior class
expenses.
A reminder that next week we will have our
fall Parent-Teacher Conference on Thursday,
September 11, from 3:30 - 6:30 P.M. All
parents are encouraged to attend this
special night to be acquainted with teachers
and to see your child's progress for the
first quarter of school. Records show that
the more involved a parent is in the
academic life of the student, the better
that the student will perform. Parents will
receive progress reports at the conferences
and will discuss with teachers strategies to
improve academic performance and goals to
set for the year. Parent-Teacher Conferences
at the high school are just as important if
not more important than any other grade
level. I encourage parents to join us in
making each student better.
The football team will play the Hollow
Rock-Bruceton Central Tigers on Friday in
the regional season opener for both teams at
7:30 P.M. at Rebel Stadium. This game is an
important first step for the Rebels as they
attempt to defend their 7-A title they have
held for the past two years. We also welcome
the Class of 1988 as they hold their 20-year
reunion. We will reserve a section of the
bleachers for the class. Gates will open at
5:00 P.M. for the game. Admission remains at
$5.00.
A final reminder that we are selling season
tickets for our football games for $25.00.
This amount will allow the individual to
attend all regular season home games for the
varsity, B-team, and freshmen games. It is
not good for middle school games. The season
ticket will allow the holder to get quick
access to the stadium and cut down on
waiting in line for admission. The money
will help the high school football program.
This Saturday Ms. Elam will begin ACT-Prep
classes for interested juniors and seniors.
The ACT is one of the two major standardized
tests accepted by most colleges and
universities. As I noted in one of my
earlier articles, we have made ACT
improvement a priority for our students. We
have dipped slightly over the past two years
and will attempt to improve this year.
ACT-Prep is an excellent opportunity for
students to hone their test-taking skills
and review skills learned in the past. Ms.
Elam had approximately 30 students to
express an interest in the Saturday class.
With the lottery offering significant money
for positive ACT results, students should
take advantage of this unique opportunity.
The class will begin at 9 A.M. and end at
12:00 P.M. Feel free to call the office if
you have questions. There is no charge for
the prep sessions.
On Thursday the golf team traveled to
Riverside for a multi-school match. The boys
improved to 15-5 with wins over Scotts Hill
and Riverside coupled with a loss to Jackson
Christian School. Tyler Bruce was the
medalist with a 38 beating over 25 other
golfers. Tyler Holt helped the cause with a
40. The Lady Rebels improved to 7-3 with
wins over Scotts Hill and J.C.S. Mary
Nethaway was medalist in the girls'
competition. This week the teams play at
home on Tuesday (9/2) and at Crockett County
on Thursday (9/4).
Our MHS cross country team participated in
their first meet of the season on Thursday
at the Lambuth Classic in Jackson. In girls'
action Kristen Mitchell competed in her
first cross country meet. Kristen finished
in the top half of the 100-person field with
a time of 16:39. In boys' action Mark Cole
picked up where he left off last season with
a 1st place finish. Mark ran a 10:36 in the
two mile race. Conor Scruton also fared well
running an 11:43 and finishing 14th. Ryan
Ferrell posted a time of 13:47 and Ramon
Hernandez a 14:40. Both teams will compete
next Thursday in a meet at Jackson Christian
School.
As always, I hope everyone has a great week. |
