Things began to look bleak for the Lady
Rockets at the end of the first half as they
fell behind by 11 at the break. But a strong
second half surge by Clarksburg pushed the
Lady Rockets into the finals of the Region
7-A Tournament via a 59-56 win over Peabody
on Saturday night at Dresden High School.
A 16-16 first frame appeared to become
nearly irrelevant as the Lady Tide outscored
Clarksburg 14-3 during the second frame, as
only an Erin Grant three-pointer prevented
the total shutout. Thanks to that dominating
second frame, the Lady Tide took a 30-19
lead at the break. Peabody was able to
build its lead to as much as 13 points after
a Rakeshia Perry jumper with 5:28 left in
the third stanza. But, after that, the tide
began to turn. Four points from Grant led to
a 6-0 run to cut the lead to seven points.
Though the Lady Tide were able to build
their lead back to 10 late in the frame,
back-to-back three-pointer in the last 91
seconds by Grant cut the gap to 45-41 at the
end of the third stanza. A pair of Brooke
Cary free throws and a jumper from Grant
countered a Peabody rally and cut the lead
to one point with 5:21 left in the game.
Peabody built its lead back to three points,
but this time, a Grant layup and a pair of
Cary free throws put the Lady Rockets ahead
by one with 3:51 left. After the lead
changed three times in the next minute, a
Grant free throw tied the score at 54-54.
Then, a free throw each from Candace Gooch
and Amanda Renfroe put the Lady Rockets back
on top for good. Three Grant free throws
countered a Perry jumper to seal the win for
the Lady Rockets. Grant led the way for
Clarksburg with 37 points. |
