A mad dash and a desperation shot would
prove to be enough to end the Gleason Lady
Bulldogs hopes of repeating as Class A
champions, as Madison Lane took the inbounds
pass and raced down the court to hit a last
second jumper to give the Lady War Eagles a
57-56 win over the Lady Bulldogs on Thursday
night in the quarterfinals of the Region 7-A
Tournament at West Carroll High School in
Atwood. West Carroll led by as much as
seven points during the third quarter, but a
pair of Jenna Frazier free throws sparked a
9-2 run that tied the score with 39 seconds
left in the stanza. But, a Jessica Carter
jumper put West Carroll back on top 38-36 at
the end of the third frame. An Emily Hall
three-pointer put the Lady War Eagles up by
five, but a Taylor Stout jumper and a pair
of Riley Auvenshine free throws cut the lead
back to one. Late in the frame, a pair of
Hall free throws put West Carroll ahead by
four. But, Gleason rallied to cut the lead
to one, and, after a Hall free throw with 16
seconds left, a pair of Stout free throws
tied the score at 48-48 and send the game
into overtime.
Gleason took the lead early in the extra
frame after a pair of Kim Edenfield free
throws. West Carroll answered those free
throws with a Lane jumper and a pair of Hall
freebies to take a 52-51 lead, but Frazier
hit a jumper and Edenfield added a pair of
free throws to put Gleason ahead by three. A
Hall driving layup cut the lead to one, then
Misty Garmany tied the game at 55-55 with
seven seconds left. A late foul sent Maggie
Lowrance to the line where she hit what
appeared to be a game-winning free throw.
However, Lane's last second shot gave the
win to the Lady War Eagles and put West
Carroll in the regional semifinals. Stout
led all scorers with 25 points in the loss,
while Auvenshine added 15.
Luther led the way for West Carroll with 21
points while Hall added 14. Carter also
tossed in 11. |
