McKenzie Splits Wins with Central

MCKENZIE (February 1) — In district high school basketball action, the Central Lady Tigers defeated the McKenzie Lady Rebels 67-47 and the Rebels defeated the Tigers 72-54.

Prior to the game, McKenzie senior cheerleaders and girls and boys basketball players and family members were honored.

Senior cheerleaders honored were: one year member Kendra Hollingsworth, daughter of Dale and Anjanette Lindsey and four year member Samantha Wheat, daughter of Sam and Lisa Wheat and Ginger Davis.

Morgan Limbaugh, lone senior and four-year member of the Lady Rebels Basketball team, was honored along with her parents, Kelly Kelly and Mike Limbaugh.

McKenzie Rebel senior players and their parents were also recognized. Seniors included: three-year member Drew Brown, son of Mike and Lorrie Brown; four-year member Derek Carr, son of Kenny and Jackie Carr; four-year member Josh Brown, son of Johnny and Cindy Brown, two-year manager Tyler Norris, son of Chuck and Lisa Norris and four-year member Shabree Payne, escorted by Ora Dean Sneed.

Lady Tigers 67, Lady Rebels 47.

Intense from the opening tip, both teams battled for control as Lady Rebel Travatia Bowden pumped in six points to lead her team to 12-11 lead at the end of the first period.

Early in the second period, Lady Rebel Zana Carter injured her right knee while planting her foot in preparation to leap for a lay up attempt and was carried from the floor and attended to on the bench by SportsWorks athletic trainer Ty Butler.

Upon resumption of play, Central’s offense, led by Jessica Willis’ eight-point performance, ignited to outscore the Lady rebels 21-7 and take a 32-19 lead at the half.

Bowden continued to lead the Lady Rebels in the second half with a strong seven-point performance but McKenzie was outscored 21-12 to trail Central 53-31 at the end of the third period before ultimately falling 67-47.

The Lady Rebels were led offensively by Bowden (17) and Limbaugh (12 points, two three-pointers). Also contributing scoring for McKenzie was Amber Nunnery (4), Tenisha Carey (4), Kelsey Carr (3), Angelique Teague (2), Hannah Potts (2), Erin Gray (2) and Evan Hudgins (1).

The Lady Tigers were led offensively by Willis (18 points, two three-pointers), Brittany Farley (11) and Amber Kendall (9). Also contributing scoring for Central were Haly Haynes (7), Allyson Grooms (6), Olivia Williams (5), Cynthia Webb (3) and Alyssa Koza (2).

Rebels 72, Tigers 54.

Spurred by Rebel Derek Carr’s solid 11 point, three three-pointer performance, McKenzie narrowly led Central 21-19 at the end of the first frame.

Central tied the contest 21-all at the 7:43 mark as Chandler Jordan converted the first basket of the second period. McKenzie battled back to lead 27-21 at the 4:15 mark. The Tigers clawed back into contention to trail 31-28 at the 1:25 mark, but aggressive scoring in the paint by Rebel Tyler Holt lifted his team to a 35-31 lead at the half.

Holt and company embarked on a 13-5 run in the third period as McKenzie outscored the Tigers 15-9 to lead 50-40 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Rebel Derek Carr nailed two pivotal three-pointers in the final frame as the Rebels outscored the Tigers 22-14 to win 72-54.

McKenzie was led offensively by Holt (22), Payne (20) and Carr (19 points, five three pointers). Also contributing scoring for the Rebels were Josh Brown (8) and Hunter Herron (2).

Central was led offensively by Chandler Jordan (12), Bubba Matlock (10), Homer Willis (nine points, three three-pointers) and Aaron Runion (8). Also contributing scoring for Central was Matt Lane (4), Nick Bryant (3), Billy Stevens (3), Haden Williams (3) and Chad Jordan (2).
