With seven lead changes in the first
quarter and twenty-three in the game,
Friday's homecoming game at West Carroll was
a hard-fought contest. The leading scorer
for visiting Big Sandy, Hunter Foust, scored
two baskets to give his team a quick 4-2
lead. War Eagle leading scorer Clint McClain
scored twelve of his twenty-two points in
the first frame and hit a lay-up at the 1:17
mark to tie the game at twenty. Xavier
Cunningham would end the period with a steal
and a basket to give West Carroll a 27-23
lead.
With 3:13 left in the half Red Devil Jerrod
Phifer hit a field goal to give Big Sandy a
37-36 lead. West Carroll scored 13 points in
the second period, but trailed Big Sandy
43-40 at the half
The War Eagles battled back swiftly as
Forward Thomas Greer made a lay-up to give
his team the lead back 44-43. The most
important play of the quarter, perhaps the
game, came with 2:50 left in the third.
Trailing 56-54, West Carroll back-up Hayden
McClain hit one of three three-pointers of
the game as he was fouled and made the free
throw for a four-point play and to give his
team a 58-56 lead. West Carroll ended the
quarter hanging on to a 62-60 lead.
The War Eagles held their lead until Red
Devil Forward Kevin Adams hit a bucket to
give his team their final lead, 75-74, with
3:23 left in the game. War Eagle Greer,
leading the charge for West Carroll in the
fourth period, scored 13 points and hit five
of seven from the foul line to spur the War
Eagles a 86-84 victory.
