Huntingdon Football Coach Jimmy Pritchard Retires

Huntingdon High School Coach Jimmy Pritchard.

HUNTINGDON (January 15) — After 32 years of coaching football at Huntingdon High School, Jimmy Pritchard is hanging up his cleats.

Retiring from coaching, Pritchard will continue to teach at Huntingdon.

Defensive coordinator for the Mustangs since 1992, Pritchard and former Head Football Coach Mike Mansfield guided Huntingdon to 14 state playoff appearances and three state championship games. The 2003 Mustangs manhandled David Lipscomb 48-14 to win the Class 2A state championship and bring the gold ball back to Huntingdon.

Pritchard noted that in 17 years of coaching together he and Mansfield had never had a coaching disagreement.

He said, “You don’t see people that work together this long-it’s almost like we were joined at the hip.”

Pritchard noted that he and Mansfield strove to coach and lead each team to play at their highest potential.

“When we got out on the football field, we aimed to do what we do best and go out and play the game. Hopefully, we played it right.”

He added, “We’ve had some success and it’s been a fun time.”

Huntingdon principal Mike Henson announced that Hickman County Head Football Coach Eric Swenson has been hired to replace Mansfield as the Mustang’s new head coach.

Swenson, who previously served as Huntingdon’s offensive coordinator between 1996 and 2004, led his team to an 11-2 record before losing to Goodpasture in the state quarterfinals.

Henson noted that Swenson’s impressive nine-year tenure as the Mustang’s offensive coordinator made him a good fit as head coach.

Regarding Swenson, Pritchard noted, “Eric is a Wing-T man and he’s going to run a Wing-T offense.”

Pritchard added that he expects future Swanson-led Mustang teams to be well prepared, physical and play well.
