retirement ceremonies at Central High
School.- photo by Joel Washburn
BRUCETON (January 22) — Before a packed
gymnasium filled with family, friends and
fellow Carroll Countians, former Hollow
Rock-Bruceton Central High School football
standout and San Francisco 49ers NFL All-Pro
Defensive Rookie of the Year Patrick Willis
witnessed the retirement of his number 42
Tiger football jersey in a ceremony held
prior to the West Carroll-Central boy’s
basketball game.
Former Central Tiger Head Football Coach and
Central Superintendent of Schools Rod
Sturdivant stated, “Ladies and gentleman,
you are truly witnessing a historic moment.
This is the first time in Central history
that a former player’s jersey has been
retired.”
Dylan Kelly, a resident of Eva
but formerly of McKenzie, has
attended two 49’ers games and got
field passes to share the experience
with Willis. He is the son of Patty
Taylor-Kelley, who is a good friend
of Willis.

He continued, “I always said that a number
would be retired only if one of our players
reached the NFL. I didn’t think that it
would ever happen. Patrick Willis proved me
wrong. He has reached and excelled at the
highest level of football, and it all
started here at Central High School in
Carroll County.”
Introducing Willis, former Tiger Defensive
Coordinator and CHS Principal Jack E. McGee
said, “Patrick, words can’t express the
pride and joy your success has brought to
all of us .On behalf of Central High School
and all of Carroll County, thank you for
representing all of us so well. It is our
honor to retire your number 42 jersey
tonight-you have worked hard for your
success and we are all so very proud of
you.”
He concluded, “In addition to your framed
jersey, I would like you to present you with
a plaque bearing a photograph of you wearing
number 42 during your senior year. A second
identical plaque will remain on display here
at Central in honor of what you have done
and will do in years to come.”
Following hugs from Sturdivant and McGee,
Willis began, “First and foremost, I want to
thank the Lord for all the blessings He has
provided me. I live by the biblical
scripture found in Luke 1:37- I can do all
things through Christ that strengthens me. I
thank God for providing me with the gift and
the opportunity to do what I do.”
Gathering himself, he continued, “Most of
the time, I play before huge crowds in
stadiums filled completely with strangers,
and the only people that I know are the ones
I am competing against. But tonight…standing
here before my family, fellow classmates
from Central, and friends from my hometown
and Carroll County who have loved me and
supported me-I am truly thankful and
humbled.”

Smiling, he concluded, “Thank you all. I
will never forget this night and this honor.
God bless you.”
Moments after the ceremonies conclusion,
Central educator and WFWL-WRJB “Voice of the
Tigers” commentator Buddy Smothers asked
during his live radio interview, “Patrick,
how does it feel to play in the NFL”?
Smiling, Willis responded, “It feels like a
dream…until you get hit. That’s when reality
sets in and you know where you are and what
you have to do.”
Asked how it felt to put his 49ers jersey on
for the first time, Willis said, “That was
special. When I first put on my number 52
jersey, it dawned on me that I had made it
to the NFL. It also made me determined to
work hard to represent myself and earn my
place on the San Francisco 49ers. “

Willis stated that he was excited about
being chosen as All-Pro first Team and is
looking forward to playing in the Pro Bowl.
He said, “I am working out and preparing for
the game now. I am a bit nervous about
playing, but looking forward to it. My head
Coach Mike Nolan has already told
me-“Rook…they are going to have fun and mess
with you out there.” I’ve never been to
Hawaii, and being able to go there and play
in the Pro Bowl is a true blessing.”
He concluded, “I just want to say that I am
a Christian and that I take my faith
seriously. I am grateful to God always for
all He had done in my life.”
