Carr Verbally Commits to Tennessee-Martin

By Ernie Smothers

MCKENZIE (January 10) — Former McKenzie Rebel quarterback Derek Carr has verbally committed to play football for the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Blessed with size and talent, Carr’s impressive passing and rushing skills helped lead the 2007 Rebels team to a record-tying 13-2 record and a first-ever appearance in the state championship game.

Regarding Carr’s verbal commitment to the Skyhawks, Rebel Head Football Coach Wade Comer said, “I am proud of Derek and everything he has accomplished. He did an outstanding job for our football team. He is a fine young man and will well represent our community at Martin.”

He continued, “He likes Martin and has verbally committed to them, but I told him that I was sure that UTM would understand if he chooses to accept an offer from a larger college. Memphis State, Middle Tennessee State University and Arkansas State have shown interest in Derek, and he may eventually decide to sign with one of them if they offer him a scholarship.

He concluded, “I know that Derek will do a fine job wherever he eventually decides to go.”

Derek is the son of Kenny and Jackie Carr.
