Rebels Win District 13A Regular Season Title, Take Twinbill from Big Sandy

MCKENZIE (April 30) In District 13A high school baseball action, the McKenzie rebels defeated the Big Sandy Red Devils 15-0 in the first game and 10-0 in the nightcap to claim the District 13A regular season title.

Rebels 15, Red Devils 0.

McKenzie pitcher Derek Carr threw seven strikeouts and scattered two hits as the Rebels’ offense pounded out 15 runs on 11 hits to force a second-inning evocation of the mercy rule in the second inning.

In the top of the first, lead-off Rebel batter Drew Brown was awarded first after being hit by a pitch. Rusty Chapman followed with a single. Derek Carr ripped an RBI single to score Brown and give McKenzie a 1-0 lead. Rebel batter Nick Chappell reached first safely via a throwing error as Chapman scored. Parker Jones smacked a RBI single to score Carr and extend McKenzie’s lead to 3-0. Clint Kee flew out for the first out of the inning. Tyler Reeder reached first after hitting a slow-roller and outrunning the throw to the bag as Jones raced across the plate to widen the Rebel lead to 4-0. Kyle Kirk singled and Brandon Sellers walked to place runners on first and second. Brown responded by ripping a two-RBI double to widen their lead to 6-0. McKenzie tacked on two additional runs in the inning to lead 8-0.

Big Sandy placed one man on base but failed to score in the top of the second inning.

In the bottom of the second, McKenzie continued its offensive onslaught as Jones led off with a single and stole second. Kee followed with a single to advance Jones to third. Reeder reached first via an error as Jones raced in to score. Kirk hit into a fielder’s choice and raced safely to first. Sellers hit an infield grounder and safely outran the throw to first. Brown, on fire at the plate, smacked a three-run RBI double to widen the Rebel lead to 11-0. Chappell followed with a RBI single and Jones tacked on another RBI as McKenzie added two additional runs to evoke the mercy rule and win commandingly, 15-0.

McKenzie 10, Big Sandy 0.

Rebel pitcher Nick Tucker, making his varsity pitching debut, threw three strikeouts, scattered three hits and no walks in four innings on the mound to lead McKenzie to a 10-0 victory over the Red Devils.

Brown led off the nightcap by being awarded first after being hit by a pitch and stole second. Jacob Fussell walked. Brown, reacting alertly to a wild pitch, raced across home plate to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead. Tyler Holt laced a single to advance Fussell to third. Fussell scored on a passed ball to extend the rebel lead to 2-0. Tyler Rhodes ripped a fielder’s choice RBI to score Holt and give the Rebels a 3-0 lead.

Big Sandy did not score in the top of the second.

McKenzie batter Matt Foster led off by racing safely to first after hitting a slow-rolling ball that followed the third base line before curving into fair territory. Rounding first, Foster was nearly thrown-out at second but advanced to third after the throw to second flew into centerfield. Brown drilled a RBI single to score Foster. Mark Newman, awarded first after being hit by a pitch, scored after Tyler Holt launched a stand-up RBI triple to widen the McKenzie lead to 5-0.

Following a scoreless third inning, McKenzie erupted for five runs to force evocation of the mercy rule as the Rebels won the contest 10-0 and clinched the District 13A regular-season title.
