Our school received notification last
week that senior Harris Laughrey is the
recipient of the Joel P. Ory Kiwanis
District Foundation Scholarship for $2500.
This scholarship honors Key Club members in
the Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee
district who have exemplified the highest
degree of basic principles of the K
Family-caring and sharing in their homes and
communities while maintaining high academic
standards and servant leadership. This award
is the highest scholarship and greatest
honor bestowed on a Key Club member at the
district level. Congratulations to Harris.
Last Thursday independent judges for
Universal Cheerleading Association chose the
twelve girls who will represent McKenzie
High School next year. Selected to the squad
are these students: Freshmen - Taylor
Buckley and Hannah Harris, Sophomores - Hope
Cunningham, Kelsey Mattox, Anaceah Warren,
and Taylor Webb, Juniors - Mallory Dunavan,
Ashlee Hampton, Hannah Herrin, and Breonna
Oglesby, and Seniors - Anna Cary and Kristin
Mitchell. Congratulations to these girls.
The band participated in the Paris Fish Fry
last Friday with great results. Earning
first place were the band, guard, and field
commander. The band also earned the title of
overall champion. Congratulations to them
and band director Keith Breeden.
On Monday, May 4, at 6:00 P.M., the band
will have its annual banquet to honor those
members who participated in band for the
year. Parents and guests will need to
purchase their tickets by April 30 to attend
the banquet. Parents of senior band students
will be guests of the school. After the
meal, Mr. Breeden will recognize outstanding
band students in each grade and in each
section of the band. He will also recount
the successes that the program has enjoyed
this year.
Also on Monday, May 4, we will have the
Lifeline Bloodmobile at the high school.
Students who are age 17 or above may donate
blood provided they are healthy, have the
proper weight, proper identification, and
parental permission. We plan to have 40-50
units collected at this time. Seniors who
have given three units during the past year
will earn the right to wear a red cord at
graduation to show their sacrifice for
others. Mrs. Anderson and the Leo
Club/Library Club help with this blood
drive.
This Friday we will have our annual Awards
Day Program at 9:30 in the gym. We will
recognize students who have excelled during
the year academically and those who have
excelled in other ways as well. We will have
a list of honorees posted at the high school
so that students can sit in a place of honor
at the assembly. We will also take photos of
our winners for the yearbook. The public is
invited to attend.
This week the cast and crew will present the
musical Annie Get Your Gun. The production
involves around 50 of our students and has
several scene changes which capture the feel
of the original play. The musical will be
performed on Saturday night at 7:30 and
Sunday afternoon at 2:30. Admission is
$5.00. Director Glynda Corbin invites
everyone to attend this annual presentation.
We have several important standardized tests
that we will administer soon. On Tuesday,
May 5, we will give the Math Gateway to all
those students in our Algebra I classes. On
Wednesday, May 6, our students in U.S.
history will take an end-of-course exam. On
the same date, our English II students will
take the Language Gateway. On Thursday, May
7, biology for technology students will take
their Science Gateway exam. On Monday, May
11, English I students will take their
end-of-course tests. All of these exams will
count 15% of their second semester grade.
The Gateway exams require a proficient or
advanced score to graduate. Students should
take all of these tests seriously as they
impact grades and graduation.
The soccer team had two home games last week
playing at the soccer field at Bethel
College. On Tuesday they matched up with the
Panthers of Decatur County High School. The
Panthers throttled the Rebels by a score of
5-1. Ryan Ferrell managed the lone score for
the home team. The Rebels ended the week on
an upbeat by defeating Gibson County 4-1.
Alex Rider had two goals and Blake Baker and
Ryan Ferrell had one goal each. Because of
early season inclement weather, the team
will jam three games in this week to wrap up
the regular season.
The baseball team played the perennial
powerhouse Huntingdon Mustangs twice last
week with no success. On Tuesday Nick
Chappell pitched very well for the first six
inning holding the Mustang offense to two
runs. In the seventh, however, behind Rebel
errors and Mustang firepower, the visitors
tacked on 13 runs to win the game 15-1. On
Wednesday the Rebels traveled to Huntingdon
to once again play the Mustangs.
Unfortunately, the results were the same.
The Rebels spotted the home team a 7-0 lead
and fell behind 12-2. They rallied for five
more runs, but still lost 12-7. Jacob
Fussell homered for the Rebels and Luke
Anderson went 2-4 at the plate. On Thursday
the Rebels ended the week with their final
home game against the Gleason Bulldogs. The
Rebels fell behind early trailing 3-0. They
finally began putting the ball in play and
forged ahead 10-4 after four innings. The
Rebels maintained their edge to win the game
10-6. Their overall record now stands at
9-10.
The softball team also faced Huntingdon at
home on Tuesday of last week. The Fillies
began with a bang with the lead-off batter
clubbing a homerun. Two other Fillies
homered as the visitors defeated the home
team 7-2. The Lady Rebels sport a 7-2
district record with the loss. On Wednesday
the Lady Rebels traveled to Union City to
face the Lady Tornadoes. Crystal Doub
pitched well and was assisted by some
extraordinary defensive play from Kelsey
Carr and Tenisha Carey. The Lady Rebels
escaped with a 3-0 victory. They ended the
week with a 16-6 overall record.

McKenzie High School extends a word of
appreciation to all the parents, businesses,
students, and school sponsors that made Prom
2009 a fun-filled success. Students from the
junior and senior classes seemed to be
genuinely appreciative of the efforts of so
many people.
As always I hope everyone has a great week.
