HUNTINGDON (April 21) The HHS Mustangs
hosted McKenzie High School in baseball
action Tuesday night as the Rebels attempted
to avenge a 18-3 home loss from the prior
evening. The Mustangs scored six early runs
to take a 6-0 lead they would not relinquish
en route to a 12-6 victory.
McKenzie went scoreless in the first two
innings prior to the Mustangs tallying six
runs before any outs were made in the bottom
of the second inning and Rebel Cody Wallace
was brought in for relief pitching. Mustang
Colin Hatch ripped a RBI single to push the
Huntingdon lead to 7-0. Sean Kendall
singled, forcing Hatch out at second base.
Two pop-fly outs followed to retire the
side.
In the top of the third inning, McKenzies
Wallace singled to lead off. Another
McKenzie single preceded a two-RBI wallop by
Luke Anderson, who was tagged out at third
base. McKenzie cut the lead to 7-2 before a
groundout and a failed stolen base tallied
the second and third outs.
Wallace threw a strikeout to begin the
bottom of the third before Mustangs Jess
Dill and Travis Rich reached base via a wild
pitch and an error. Jay Pierce smacked a RBI
sacrifice fly and Mustang starting pitcher
Caleb Crocker followed with a RBI triple,
furthering the lead to 9-2. A Rebel error
allowed another Mustang run to score before
a single by Kendall and a two-RBI double by
Will McClure gave HHS a 12-2 lead at the
close of the inning.
Rebel Logan Poore hit a double and stole
third base between a pop-up by Tyler Holt
and two Crocker strikeouts in the top of the
fourth inning.
Rebel freshman reliever Mike Curry tossed
two strikeouts as Huntingdon sent three up
and three down in the bottom of the fourth
inning.
In the top of the fifth, Rebel Brandon
Sellers walked with one out and Anderson
singled before a wild pitch advanced both
runners to scoring position. Crocker threw a
strikeout preceding a two-RBI wallop by Nick
Chappell to cut the lead to 12-4. Tyler
Rhoads followed with a RBI double as
Huntingdon remained on top, 12-5.
After hitting Crocker with a pitch, Curry
threw three strikeouts to prevent further
runs by Huntingdon in the bottom of the
fifth.
Jacob Fussell made the lone hit of the sixth
inning with a solo home run shot. McKenzie
sent three others up and down and cut the
Mustang lead to 12-6.
Luke Anderson singled to lead off the
seventh inning, but a keen HHS double play
and a Chappell groundout closed the contest
with the Mustangs victorious, 12-6.
