JACKSON (January 24) — Sophomore Emily Bolin of McKenzie is the district winner in the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Voice of Democracy speech-writing contest.
The previous week, Bolin won the contest at the local VFW Post, securing her a spot in the district competition, judged at the Jackson VFW. At the district level, her speech, “My Responsibility to America,” earned first-place honors and a $100 cash prize.
Her work was advanced to the state-level competition, where the winner moves on to the national level. Bolin took second place last year at the local level, behind her sister, Lexie.
In an interview with The Banner, Bolin said she plans to submit another speech next year. Asked why she is dedicated to participating in the contest, she said, “I think it’s important, because you have to remember what came before you.”
She is the daughter of Stephanie Bolin and the late James Bolin.
