McKenzie School Board Hears About New P.E. Equipment, Activities
BY JOEL WASHBURN
McKENZIE (January 31) — Students at McKenzie Middle School have new equipment and games for physical education classes, thanks to a grant $10,000 grant from Wells Fargo.
PE teachers Ty Riggins and Jennifer Nelson spoke to members of the Board of Education of the McKenzie Special School District last Tuesday. The two said the grant was for $9,000 of equipment and $1,000 cash. The goal is to increase physical activity of the children and to encourage students to be creative and invent their own games. During some of the activities, students work in teams and stop at certain stations, read the challenge, and collective work to solve the problem. Students are also challenged to assess the new equipment, go to the computer labs, and develop new games to increase students’ physical activities.
The two PE teachers also hosted roller skating recently to teach some students how to skate while providing a funfilled activity for students to exercise.
Riggins and Nelson said they interact with approximately 300 students each day.
