Initial Plans for Baseball, Softball Facilities Presented

If all goes as planned, West Carroll baseball and softball players, coaches, and fans will be enjoying new facilities when the 2018 season rolls around.

Jev Vaughan with Vaughan Associates Architects, Inc. presented some initial spec drawings for new press box/ concession stand facilities for both the baseball and softball fields to the West Carroll Board of Education at their Thursday night meeting.

As Vaughn detailed, the two buildings will have walls made of split face block and metal roofs.

“I like the layout,” said Board Chairman Jimmy Halford after viewing the drawings. “Have the coaches seen these yet?”

Vaughan said that the coaches have not seen the plans, but he added that he would be willing to schedule a meeting with the baseball and softball coaches to go over the plans with them.

Interim Director of Schools Betty Wallace asked Vaughan when he would have a ballpark figure as to how much the construction project will cost the school district.

Vaughan said he could probably get her an estimate some time next week.

Vaughan added that extending utility service to these buildings would probably be a considerable expense.

As far as a time frame, Vaughn said the project could probably be completed in three months, depending on the weather.


Money for FCCLA considered Several student members of the West Carroll High School Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) addressed the board, requesting financial help in taking two student teams to the National FCCLA Conference July 2-6 in Nashville.

As FCCLA sponsor Linda Black detailed, two student teams from West Carroll placed first at the State FCCLA Conference earlier this year, qualifying them to participate in national competition.

Ninth graders Zoey Cook, Aleisha Annis, and Susie Waters qualified in the Junior Food Innovations competition with a breakfast smoothie they invented.

Juniors Alayna Murphy, Elizabeth Hudgins, and Emily Hudgins qualified for nationals in the Occupational Food Innovations category with their Hawaiian chicken entrée.

“This is the first time ever that we’ve had this many qualify for nationals,” said Black. “I’m very excited.”

Black said that taking all six girls to the conference would cost around $6,740. She added that they have raised approximately $2,000 so far through fundraising activities.

“I’m proud of these teams and the effort they have put in, and I feel like we need to help out,” said Halford, who recommended that they continue fundraising efforts and then come back before the board during their June meeting. “You should have a better idea of how much you will need by then.”

The students showed off their culinary skills by treating the board and visitors to a full meal after the meeting.


In other business, the board:

•Approved yearbook supplements for Lee Ann Edwards, Shanna Pafford, and Jeanne Hooper in the amount of $750 each.

•Approved the 2017-18 school supply lists.

•Approved a trip to Washington D.C. for 7th and 8th grade social studies students during spring break of 2018 on a second reading.

•Voted to go with TEC and Verizon Wireless for local and long distance phone services and to apply for e-rate reimbursements for these services during the 2017-18 fiscal year.

•Gave second reading approval to a board policy amendment regarding faculty use of social media and text messaging.

•Approved a board policy regarding employee vacations and holidays on a first reading. The new policy limits the number of vacation days that can be rolled over from one year to the next to ten — to go into effect in June of 2018.

•Authorized Wallace to advertise for bids for new student Chromebooks — with the stipulation that the board may choose to reject all bids.

•Heard Wallace express her gratitude to the board for their patience during her year as interim director. “You’ve done well and handled yourself well,” said Halford. “We appreciate all that you have done.”
