Beta Sigma Phi Releases New Ornament, The War Memorial
The War Memorial is an imposing granite memorial sitting in McKenzie’s Veteran’s Park. The memorial was sponsored by the Rotary Club in 1943 after an eight-man training crew was killed in a fiery airplane crash in the nearby Macedonia community while on a training maneuver from the Army Air Base at Halls, Tenn.
The Rotary Club’s concept was to honor the crash victims and those men from WWI and WWII who had sacrificed their lives for their country. Donations from citizens throughout the county were made and on June 29, 1944 the monument was unveiled. Today the monument memorializes all the brave men from our area who have given the supreme sacrifice of their lives defending this great country through both World Wars, Korea, Viet Nam, Desert Storm, Afghanistan and Iraqi Freedom.
Ornaments can be purchased from any Beta Sigma Phi member or at the McKenzie City Hall. Prices are $13.50 each, or $12.00 with sales of three or more. This is the eighth ornament in a series.
