McKENZIE (July 26) — The McKenzie High School Marching Rebels ended the summer with their usual band camp leading up to the start of school. The band learned music and marching drill for this year’s field show, “American Quintet.”

The camp wrapped up Thursday evening with a preview of the show for parents in the MHS Theatre. The band played the music on the theatre stage while guard members showed off some of their routine throughout the auditorium.

The 53-member band is under the direction of Keith Breeden. Staff for the camp included Bryan Finley, Sandi Walden, TJ Johnson, Brian Lowe, Michael Keenan, Christian Nunnery, Michael Carter, Ashley Bush, Annias Haney and Fernando Huitzachel.

“American Quintet” by American composer John Williams is composed of five movements; the story is set in WWII.

A description of the show, provided by the band, reads: “World War II was the most destructive conflict in history. It cost more money, damaged more property, killed more people and caused more far-reaching changes than any other war in history. Our first movement starts with the normalcy before the war. We then transition to the tension on personal relationships that are impacted with the uncertainty if loved ones will ever return home. The resilience of the American people to adapt and overcome adversity is seen within the third and fourth movements. In the last movement, we see the troops returning in a classic parade formation, and we are thankful for the ones returning and will never forget the ones that did not.” Breeden told The Banner, “The last couple of years, we have taken you back to a couple of beloved classics, Mary Poppins and Beauty and the Beast. This year, we thought we would give the public a history lesson. We are truly excited about this production. We have been considering this for about six or seven years and now it’s coming to life. We would like to thank the community for their continued support and invite everyone out this fall to see the show.”

The Marching Rebels will premier “American Quintet” on Friday, August 17 as McKenzie hosts Huntingdon to open the football season.
