Carroll County Launches Walk Across America

Fitness is a journey. In Carroll County, 31.1 percent of adults are obese and 37.2 percent of adults are reported to be inactive.

The UT Extension is promoting overall health of the community by partnering with Coordinated School Health to host this year’s Walk Across Tennessee event.

Walk Across Tennessee is an eight-week walking program designed to encourage friends and family to join a walking team and walk as many miles as one can. Teams are comprised of six people, of any age. Anyone can participate: youth groups, bible study groups, athletic groups, businesses, etc.

The goal is for each team to collectively walk 500 miles – equal to the length of Tennessee from east to west – during the eight-week period.

The names of each and every team that walks 500 miles or more is eligible for a random drawing for great prizes donated by Coordinated School Health. Drawings will take place on Friday, November 9.

Why Walk?

Walking is one of the easiest ways to be physical active. One can do it almost anywhere and at any time. Walking is also inexpensive. All that is needed is a comfortable pair of shoes and a little time to add a few steps to daily! One mile is about 2,000 steps, or a 20-minute walk. Studies suggest people who increase their walking to 10,000 steps daily experience health benefits.

Here are a few of the many reasons why you should get walking by joining Walk Across Tennessee:

• Improves your heart fitness by improving your circulation and by making your heart stronger. This reduces your chances of a heart attack and stroke.

• Helps you sleep better

• Helps control appetite
