Lady Rebels, War Eagles Claim Titles

ATWOOD (December 4) — Teams vied for the Carroll County Middle School Basketball Championship Monday night at West Carroll Junior/Senior High School.

First, the McKenzie Lady Rebels and Huntingdon Fillies squared off in the girls’ title game. The low-scoring contest was close at the half, but McKenzie pulled away in the third to claim a 35-25 win and the county crown.

The nightcap was a fast-paced offensive bout between the West Carroll War Eagles and the McKenzie Rebels. The Rebels fell behind in the second quarter, but cut the deficit to just two points early in the fourth before the War Eagles pulled ahead for a 55-42 championship victory.

Following each game, players named to the All-County team were announced and recognized on the court.

McKenzie Lady Rebels 35, Huntingdon Fillies 25

The Lady Rebels held a 6-4 edge after the opening frame, led by Briley Auvenshine with four points. Kylie Reynolds and Isabelle Wright each hit a free throw. Fillies Lia Fuller and Kayla Pulling scored two points each.

McKenzie outscored Huntingdon, 5-3, in the second quarter as both defenses remained stingy. Auvenshine scored three, and Wright added a pair. Caytee Maxwell scored two points for the Fillies, and Fuller hit a freebie. At the half, the Lady Rebels led, 11-7.

The Lady Rebels pulled away with a 15-6 advantage in the third. Auvenshine led with five points, and Savannah Davis and MiKaela Reynolds each hit a three-pointer. Wright and K. Reynolds each scored two points. Fuller, Kenadie Gibson and Kelby Crossno each had a pair for Huntingdon. Entering the final frame, McKenzie led, 26-13.

The Fillies cut the deficit in the fourth with a 12-9 rally. Fuller and Pulling each scored four, and Crossno and Lindsey Sanders had a pair each. Auvenshine scored five points, and K. Reynolds had four.

Lady Rebel Briley Auvenshine led all scorers with 17 points. Kylie Reynolds scored seven.

Lia Fuller led Huntingdon with nine, and Kayla Pulling scored six points.

The Fillies outrebounded McKenzie, 24-19, led by Caytee Maxwell with six boards. Kelby Crossno had four rebounds.

Kylie Reynolds led McKenzie with five rebounds, and Briley Auvenshine had four.

West Carroll War Eagles 55, McKenzie Rebels 42

The Rebels earned a slight edge, 9-8, after the first frame, led by Jake McDaniel with five points. Andrew Cole and Etijay Tharpe each scored a pair. War Eagle Xander Moon scored five, including a three-pointer. Josh Clark scored three points.

West Carroll grabbed the lead with a 19-12 advantage in the second quarter. Desmond Bates led with 11 points, including a trio of threes. Jayden Taylor scored five, also with a three, and Moon hit another three. McDaniel scored six for McKenzie, including a three-pointer. Bryant Haynes had four points, and Marquez Taylor had a pair. At the half, the War Eagles led, 27-21.

McKenzie outscored West Carroll, 14-11, in the third to cut the deficit to three points. McDaniel had six points, and Haynes and McCaslin each scored four. Moon scored six for the War Eagles on a pair of threes, Clark scored four points, and Taylor hit s freebie. Heading into the final frame, West Carroll led, 38-35.

The War Eagles sealed their title run with a 17-7 fourth quarter, led by Clark with ten points and Moon with five, including a three-pointer. Taylor and Bates each hit a free throw. Tharpe had five points for the Rebels, including a three, and McCaslin added a pair.

War Eagle Xander Moon led all scorers with 19 points, including five three-pointers. Josh Clark scored 17, and Desmond Bates had a dozen, including a trio of threes.

Jake McDaniel led McKenzie with 17 points, including a three. Bryant Haynes had eight points.

West Carroll won the rebounding battle, 20-12, led by Josh Clark with a dozen.

Rebel Jake McDaniel had five rebounds.
