Loretto Defeats Huntingdon in Boys’ Championship

HUNTINGDON (December 2830) — Huntingdon High School hosted the Huntingdon Point Guard/Coca-Cola Invitational Christmas Tournament Thursday through Saturday.

The boys’ bracket featured eight area teams. The Loretto Mustangs topped the host Mustangs to win the championship. The Camden Lions defeated the West Carroll War Eagles in overtime to claim third place. The McKenzie Rebels beat the Riverside Panthers for fifth place. South Gibson and Gibson County matched up for seventh place (results unavailable).

Championship: Loretto Mustangs 74, Huntingdon Mustangs 47

Loretto led Huntingdon 25-15 after the first frame, 42-21 at the half, 59-38 after three quarters, and sealed the win with a 15-9 advantage in the fourth.

Loretto’s Ryan Weathers led all scorers with 18 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Will McBee scored 17, also with a pair of threes, and Kirkland Surrat scored 16.

Jeremiah Pearson led Huntingdon with 13 points, including a pair of threes.

Third Place: Camden Lions 68, West Carroll War Eagles 65 (OT)

West Carroll led 25-20 after the opening frame, but Camden rallied to lead 38-31 at the half and 49-45 at the end of three. The War Eagles bounced back to tie it at the end of regulation, 55-55, but the Lions outscored them 13-10 in overtime.

War Eagle Zach Heckert led all scorers with 25 points, and Luke Moore scored 17, including a three-pointer.

Dalton Furr led Camden with 21 points, including a pair of threes.

Fifth Place: McKenzie Rebels 57, Riverside Panthers 52

The contest was tied 14-14 after one frame, and McKenzie took a 31-29 edge at the half. Riverside came back to lead 42-40 after the third, but the Rebels rallied 17-10 in the fourth for the win.

Panther Daryl McElrath led all scorers with 23 points, including a trio of threes. Carson Hehe scored 15, also with a three.

Lucas King led the Rebels with 21 points, including a trio of threes. Ben Austin scored 20 points.

Winner’s Bracket: Loretto Mustangs 66, War Eagles 39

Loretto led 20-16 after the first and 39-20 at the half. They upped the lead to 55-26 after three quarters, and West Carroll cut into the final deficit with a 13-11 advantage in the fourth.

Mustang Kirkland Surrat led all scorers with 19 points, and Ryan Weathers scored 16, including a pair of threes.

Zach Heckert led West Carroll with ten, and Carson Lee Robinson scored nine on a trio of threes.

Winner’s Bracket: Huntingdon

Mustangs 53, Lions 38

Camden led 16-11 after one frame, but the Mustangs stormed back to lead 28-21 at the intermission. They went on to lead 40-27 after the third and sealed the win with a 13-11 advantage in the fourth.

Mustang Dallas Willis led all scorers with 14 points, and Jeremiah Pearson scored 13, including a three-pointer. Kade Pearson and Tyrese Mebane each had ten points, Pearson with a pair of threes.

Dalton Furr, Cade Wyatt and Chase Douglas led Camden with six points each. Furr had a threepointer.

Lower Bracket: Rebels 68, Pioneers 39

McKenzie led Gibson County 15-8 after the first, 35-19 at the half, 51-26 after three quarters and capped the win with a 17-13 advantage in the fourth.

Rebel Lucas King led all scorers with 26 points, including a pair of threes. Ben Austin had 13, including a three-pointer.

Donte Holder led the Pioneers with eleven points.

Lower Bracket: Panthers 55, Hornets 52

Riverside had a 9-8 edge after one frame, but South Gibson came back to lead 25-21 at the break. The Panthers regained the advantage 37-35 after the third and outscored the Hornets 18-17 in the fourth to seal the victory.

Panther Dawson Larson led all scorers with 16 points, including four three-pointers. Daryl McElrath scored a dozen, also with a three.

Gabe Martin led South Gibson with 13 points, and Nathan Hicks had a dozen, including a trio of threes.

Opening Round War Eagles 53, Rebels 42

McKenzie led 11-9 after the first, but West Carroll rallied to take a 27-23 lead at the half. They upped the advantage to 39-31 after three quarters and clinched the win with a 14-11 tilt in the fourth.

Rebel Lucas King led all scorers with 20 points, including a three-pointer.

Zach Heckert led West Carroll with 13, and Luke Moore scored eleven, including a three.

Loretto Mustangs 73, Pioneers 39

Loretto opened up a 27-11 lead after one frame and upped it to 45-24 at intermission. They went on to lead 62-32 after the third and outscored Gibson County 11-7 in the fourth.

Mustangs Ryan Weathers and Kirkland Surrat led all scorers with 18 points each, Weathers with five three-pointers.

Billy McMinn led the Pioneers with 16 points.

Lions 61, Hornets 56

The contest was tied 10-10 after the first, but Camden led 30-19 at the half and 44-37 after three quarters. South Gibson closed the final gap with a 19-17 advantage in the fourth.

Lion Davis Hopkins led all scorers with 15, including a three. Dalton Furr scored 14, including a trio of threes.

Adren Pearce led the Hornets with a dozen.

Huntingdon Mustangs 58, Panthers 52

Riverside led 14-8 after one frame, but Huntingdon tied it at 26-26 at the half. The Panthers regained the lead 39-36 at the end of the third, but the Mustangs rallied for a 22-13 advantage in the fourth to win the game.

Mustang Kaleel Bailey led all scorers with 21 points, including four three-pointers. Kade Pearson scored 19 with five threes.

Carson Hehe led Riverside with 18 points, and Daryl McElrath scored 16.
