McKenzie Takes Two from Milan

McKENZIE (January 4) — McKenzie High School kicked off the new year by hosting Milan for a pair of hoops contests Thursday. After three quarters of close basketball, the Lady Rebels dominated down the stretch to rout the Lady Bulldogs, 57-35. The Rebels pulled away in the middle minutes and held off a late Milan rally to claim the victory, 59-46.

The opening frame was a 6-6 draw, thanks to a three-pointer at the buzzer by Lady Rebel Shelby Butler. Jacey Davis also hit a three. Lady Bulldog Ella Fagin hit a three, Madison Johnson had a pair, and DeAja Simmons hit a free throw.

McKenzie took the lead with an 18-11 advantage in the second quarter. Butler and Shelby Davis each scored six, each with a threepointer. J. Davis, Lilly Bennett and Whitley Smith each had two points. Lady Bulldog Kara Scott scored six on a pair of threes, Iyanna Hall had three points, and Brooklyn Barnes had a pair. At the half, McKenzie led 24-17.

The third was another wash, 16-16. J. Davis led the Lady Rebels with eight, and Bennett scored four. Smith and Brooke Hobson each had two points. Fagin scored six for Milan on a pair of threes, and Hall had five points. Johnson and Simmons each added a pair, and Brinley McAlexander hit a free throw. Entering the final frame, McKenzie led 40-33.

The Lady Rebels sealed the win by outscoring Milan 17-2 in the fourth. Bennett led with six, and Macey Ognibene scored five points. S. Davis, J. Davis and Isabella Colotta each had two points. Johnson and Fagin each hit a freebie for the Lady Bulldogs.

Lady Rebel Jacey Davis led all scorers with 15 points, including a three-pointer. Lilly Bennett scored a dozen, and Shelby Butler had nine, including a pair of threes.

Ella Fagin led Milan with ten points, including a trio of threepointers.

The first frame was a wash, 14-14. Rebel Ben Austin scored five, including an old-fashioned three-point play to tie it at the buzzer. Lazarick Hill had four points, Tyler Spivey had three, and Nate Whitsell had a pair. Bulldog Terrick Glenn scored six points, Lamarcus Jones had four, and DaVante Herron and Austin White each had a pair.

McKenzie dominated the second quarter, 14-2, led by Lucas King with nine points. Austin hit a three-pointer, and Whitsell added a pair. Herron had the lone bucket by Milan. At the half, the Rebels led 28-16.

The McKenzie lead grew with a 16-9 advantage in the third, led by Micah Austin with seven, including a three. King had four points, B. Austin scored three, and Whitsell added a pair. Herron scored six for the Bulldogs on a pair of threes, and Tyler Johnson also hit a three-pointer. Heading into the final frame, the Rebels led 44-25.

Milan rallied in the fourth, 2115, for a closer final score. Johnson led the Bulldogs with eight, including a pair of threes, and Glenn scored six. Herron had five points, including another threepointer, and White added a pair. King had five for McKenzie, and Whitsell scored four. B. Austin, M. Austin and Lane Horton each scored two points.

Rebel Lucas King led all scorers with 18 points. Ben Austin had 13, including a three-pointer, and Nate Whitsell scored ten. Micah Austin had nine points, including a three-pointer.

DaVante Herron led Milan with 15, including a trio of threes. Terrick Glenn had a dozen, and Tyler Johnson scored eleven, including a trio of threes.
