Lady Bulldogs, Rebels Split Wins

GLEASON (January 29) — Gleason High School hosted McKenzie for a pair of nondistrict contests Monday night. The Lady Rebels had a slim lead early, but the Lady Bulldogs pulled ahead and held off a late McKenzie rally for a 57-48 win. The Rebels cruised to a 61-22 victory over the bulldogs.

The Lady Rebels had an 11-10 edge after the opening frame, led by Bailey Nelson with seven points. Lilly Bennett and Shelby Butler each had a pair. Lady Bulldogs Kenady Atkins and Ally Spain each hit a threepointer, and Lillie Freeman and Mahlese McDonald each scored two points.

Gleason took the lead for good with a 17-6 advantage in the second quarter, led by Shelbie Burton with six points. Aubrey Wallace hit a three, and Freeman also scored three points. McDonald and Jayden Green each had a pair, and Alexis Anderson hit a free throw. Bennett had three points for McKenzie, Whitley Smith scored a pair, and Shelby Davis hit a free throw. At the break, the Lady Bulldogs led 27-17.

The Lady Bulldogs outscored McKenzie 16-14 in the third, led by Atkins with five, including a three. Freeman scored four points, Anderson hit a three, and Green and Wallace each added a pair. Butler scored six for the Lady Rebels on a pair of threes, and Bennett had four points. Davis and Nelson each scored a pair. Entering the final frame, Gleason led 43-31.

McKenzie rallied 17-14 in the fourth for a closer final score, led by Nelson with eight. Bennett scored six on a pair of threes, and Butler hit another three-pointer. Green had six for the Gleason, and Anderson scored three points. McDonald and Wallace each added a pair, and Burton hit a freebie.

Lady Rebel Bailey Nelson led all scorers with 17 points. Lilly Bennett had 15, including a pair of threes, and Shelby Butler scored eleven with a trio of threes.

Jayden Green led Gleason with ten points, and Lillie Freeman scored nine.

Rebels 61, Bulldogs 22

McKenzie stormed out to a 21-5 lead after the first frame, led by Lazarick Hill with seven points. Lucas King and Ben Austin each scored three points, and Tyler Spivey, Nate Whitsell, Lane Horton and Micah Austin each had two points. Bulldog Olen Reed hit a threepointer, and Elijah Young had a pair.

The Rebels outscored Gleason 26-4 in the second quarter, led by King with eleven, including a three. Whitsell scored six, and Hill had four points. M. Austin hit a three-pointer, and B. Austin added a pair. Reed and Young each had a pair for the Bulldogs. At the half, McKenzie led 47-9. The Bulldogs had a 6-2 advantage in a quick third, led by Dawson Arnold with a threepointer. Jamison Lifsey had a pair, and Reed hit a freebie. Rebel Johnathan Moore had two points. Heading into the final frame, McKenzie led 49-15.

The Rebels capped the win with a 12-7 tilt in the fourth, led by Eli Surber with five points, including a three. West Cook also hit a three, and Evan Jarrett and Stephone Haynes each had a pair. Bulldog Alex Sandoval scored five, including a three, and Brady Witherspoon had two points.

Rebel Lucas King led all scorers with 14 points, including a three-pointer. Lazarick Hill had eleven points.

Olen Reed led Gleason with six points, including a three.
