McKenzie Swept by Bradford

McKENZIE (February 3) — McKenzie High School hosted Bradford Saturday for a pair of basketball contests. The girls’ game was back-and-forth until the fourth, when the Lady Red Devils dominated the Lady Rebels for a 53-38 win. The nightcap was similar, with the Red Devils taking a third-quarter lead and holding off a late Rebel rally for a 47-44 victory.
Bradford Lady Red Devils 53, McKenzie Lady Rebels 38
The Lady Rebels edged the opening frame, 12-9, led by Lilly Bennett with five points. Whitley Smith scored four, and Shelby Davis hit a three-pointer. Lady Red Devils Adison Mathis and Rebecca Walter each had four points, and Libby Sharp hit a free throw.
Bradford took the lead with a 13-6 advantage in the second quarter, led by Hannah Avery with a three-pointer. Sharp, Walter, Anna Taylor, Kaylee McAlister and Lexie Knott each had a pair. Shelby Butler had all six for McKenzie on a pair of threes. At the break, the Lady Red Devils led 22-18.
McKenzie rallied for the lead in the third, outscoring Bradford 1610. Butler led with nine points on a trio of threes, and Bennett had four points. Davis added a pair, and Jacey Davis hit a free throw. Taylor and Dezarai White each had four for the Lady Red Devils, Taylor with a three. Walter added a pair. Entering the final frame, the Lady Rebels led 34-32.
The Lady Red Devils dominated the fourth 21-4 for the win, led by Avery with nine, including a pair of threes. Taylor and Blair Mercer each hit a three-pointer, and White, Mathis and Walter each added a pair. Smith and La’Jada Edmonson each had a pair for McKenzie.
Lady Rebel Shelby Butler led all scorers with 15 points on five three-pointers. Lilly Bennett scored nine points.
Hannah Avery led Bradford with a dozen, including a trio of threes. Rebecca Walter scored ten, and Anna Taylor had nine with a pair of threes.
Red Devils 47, Rebels 44
Bradford jumped out to a 16-9 lead after the first frame, led by Kobe Roach with four points. Chancy Roach and Cayden Cravette each hit a three, and Phenix Street, CJ Siddell and Nate Oglesby each had a pair. Nate Whitsell led the Rebels with four, Ben Austin scored three points, and Lazarick Hill had a pair.
McKenzie rallied 10-3 to tie the game in the second quarter, led by Austin with five points, including a three-pointer. Lucas King and Micah Austin each had a pair, and Whitsell hit a freebie. C. Roach hit another three for Bradford. At the half, the contest was knotted at 19-19.
The Red Devils regained the lead with a 15-8 advantage in the third, led by Street and Siddell with four points each. Dawson Mackin hit a three, and K. Roach and Cravette each added a pair. Whitsell led McKenzie with four, and B. Austin and M. Austin each added a pair. Heading into the final frame, Bradford led 34-27.
The Rebels fell just short of a comeback in the fourth, outscoring the Red Devils 17-13. King led with nine, including a threepointer. Whitsell again scored four, and Hill and B. Austin each added a pair. Street and K. Roach each had four points for Bradford. C. Roach and Siddell each added a pair, and Cravette hit a freebie.
Rebel Nate Whitsell led all scorers with 13 points. Ben Austin had a dozen, including a three-pointer, and Lucas King scored eleven, also with a three.
Phenix Street and Kobe Roach led Bradford with ten points each.
