GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — The Bethel University Wildcats broke two records Saturday while competing in the FLW Yeti College series Bass tournament held at Lake Guntersville State Park near Guntersville, Alabama The records set by Bethel Bass Team this past week included the most teams to qualify for nationals from one tournament at five and the most teams to qualify for the nationals from one season at nine.

The Wildcats placed 3rd, 6th, and 12th out of 273 Boats and 546 Anglers competing. The Bass Cat team of Cole Walker and Wilson Smith captured 3rd place. Dax Elwart and Logan Milsaps finished 6th while Heath Smith and Isaac Duncan took 12th place. Bethel also placed a team in 23rd and a team in 27th to move a total of five teams from one tournament to the national championship for 2019.

Bethel previously held the record for the most teams qualifying for the FLW National Championship from one tournament at a total of four.

The record number of Boats from one School qualifying for the FLW National Championship for one season was also held by the Bethel squad at six for FLW and six for Bassmasters.

The Wildcats will have 12 Anglers from 2017 season headed to the 2018 FLW Nationals to be held this May in Shreveport. Louisiana FLW takes ten percent from each of the four FLW college tournaments held across the nation to the FLW National Championship each year.

Bethel had already qualified four teams for the nationals at Lake Seminole two weeks ago which tied the record for most teams from one school qualified at one tournament thus bringing the total number of Bethel Bass Teams headed to the 2019 FLW National Championship to a record breaking nine boats.

“With two more FLW tournaments left to go in the season we could qualify even more teams for the nationals”, said Coach Garry Mason. He added, “The great thing about our top three finishers at Guntersville was that all three boats that helped set the new records are freshmen and sophomores. Coach Louden and I are so very proud of our team and the strong finish in the Lake Guntersville tournament.”

The Bass Cats now head to their home waters of Kentucky Lake for two tournaments. The FLW Open out Gilbertsville, Kentucky and the Cabelas Big Bass Splash out of Paris Landing State Park.

The Bethel squad also has qualified four teams to the Bassmasters Nationals as well and still have three more Bassmasters tournaments in which more Bethel teams could qualify.
