STATEBOUND!: Fillies Crush Lady Irish in Sectional, 55-28

HUNTINGDON (March 3) — The Region 6A Champion Fillies hosted the Houston County Lady Irish Saturday in a Sectional contest looking to reach the TSSAA Class A Girls’ State Basketball Tournament for the second consecutive season.

The Fillies wasted no time ensuring their ticket to Murfreesboro was punched, jumping out to a 14-0 lead and cruising to a 55-28 victory in front of a packed gym of Huntingdon faithful that didn’t lose intensity despite the lopsided game.

Huntingdon will take on Moore County Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Murphy Center on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University. With a win, they’ll take on either Pickett County or Greenfield on Friday. The Fillies beat Greenfield on the road in November, but the Lady Yellowjackets handed the Huntingdon its only loss of the season in January. On the other side of the bracket are Wartburg Central, Unaka, former district rival Dresden and Summertown, who the Fillies narrowly defeated in the region championship game.

The Fillies set the tone right away, starting the game with a 14-0 run en route to a 23-3 lead at the end of the opening frame. Alli Jones led with ten points, including a three-pointer. Taylor Smith and Marisa Belew each scored four, Jasmine Dupree hit a three-pointer, and Adyn Swenson had a pair. Karlee Pulley had a three-pointer for the Lady Irish.

Huntingdon upped the lead in the second, outscoring Houston County 11-6, led by Smith with three points. Belew, Swenson, Tyasia Reed and Emily Williams each had a pair. Lady Irish Sidney Brake, Alissa Downs and Bailey Hooper each scored two points. At the half, the Fillies led 34-9.

Houston County knocked just a point off the deficit with a 15-14 advantage in the third, led by Downs with seven, including a three-pointer. Pulley also hit a three, Hope Witherspoon scored three points, and Hooper added a pair. Smith scored eight for Huntingdon with a pair of threes, Belew had four points, and Swenson added a pair. Entering the final frame, the Fillies led 48-24.

The Fillies closed out the win in a quick, 7-4 fourth, led by Swenson with four points. Smith added a pair, and Belew hit a free throw. Brake and Weatherspoon each added a pair for Houston County.

Huntingdon’s Taylor Smith led all scorers with 17 points, including a pair of threes. Marisa Belew scored eleven, and Alli Jones and Adyn Swenson each had ten points, Jones with a three.

Alissa Downs led the Lady Irish with nine points, including a three-pointer.
