Trinity Christian Academy Hires McKenzie’s Drew Hayes

Trinity Christian Academy in Jackson announced Friday, June 1 that McKenzie native Drew Hayes will join their staff teaching English and coaching football and baseball. Drew is a 2006 graduate of McKenzie High School, where he was a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. Hayes set numerous records in football and helped win a baseball state championship his senior year in 2006. Hayes is currently 5th in career passing in Tennessee throwing for 9,292 yards. He is 3rd in career completions with 738. Drew holds the state records for completions and attempts in a game completing 46 of 73 passes in a game against Union City in 2005. He was named All-State twice and won a Mr. Football award in 2005. In baseball, Drew played shortstop and pitched. He was nearly unhittable during his senior year helping McKenzie win a state championship in 2006 with an ERA well below 1.0. In the State Championship game against Forrest, he struck out 12 and scored a run.

By this time, Hayes already was getting attention from Major League Baseball getting drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks shortly after he graduated from McKenzie. He chose to stay home at Bethel University his freshman year and play baseball and football. He transferred to Vanderbilt, where he played his last three years of college and was drafted twice by major league teams. Seattle in his junior year and Cincinnati drafted him in 2010 when he graduated college.

Over the next several years, he worked his way up the Red’s farm system starting in Billings, Montana and moving to Dayton, Ohio for a year before landing in Pensacola for several seasons. Drew went on to play for the Reds AAA team in Louisville before getting the call that very few select ever get.

In April 2016, he was called up to join the Reds where he saw action in six major league games. In 2017, he played for an independent minor league team, South Maryland Blue Crabs. During his time as a professional, Drew never forgot his hometown or his roots coming home and spending time as a volunteer coach with MHS and being a substitute teacher.

Drew is the son of Glenn and Joyce Hayes of McKenzie and is engaged to Mariah McKenty of Benton, Kentucky.
