Annual Freedom Festival Celebrated in McKenzie

Posted

McKENZIE — The Annual Freedom Festival got underway with a well-attended Kiddie Parade Thursday morning. Kids and their families came out and had fun despite the hot sun and rising temperatures.
The remainder of the festival took place later in the evening at McKenzie City Park despite interruptions from Mother Nature. Opening ceremonies began with the posting of colors by McKenzie Cub Scout Pack #78 followed by a welcome from McKenzie Mayor Jill Holland and a prayer by Bro. Dennis Trull. Megan Allen sang the National Anthem.
Most Patriotic Window and Patriotic Yard awards were announced with Belles on Broadway winning Most Patriotic Window and Edward Sexton winning Most Patriotic Yard.
The Legends Band entertained everyone until a thundershower interrupted things for about an hour sending people running for cover. Most went home and came back later for the fireworks display. A few took cover at the park and stuck around. The band was unable to continue performing after the rain due to wet equipment but the fireworks display did occur on time following Taps and the Retirement of Colors. The crowd was still decent for the fireworks despite the inclement weather.
