DECATUR COUNTY — A part-time deputy with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department died of an apparent heart attack on Sunday. He was off duty at the time.
According to Sheriff Andy Dickson, Daniel Paar, 65, died as he was traveling in his personal vehicle back from Kentucky. Witnesses say he was slumped over the wheel as his vehicle exited the interstate at the Carroll-Decatur County line.

Sheriff Dickson said Paar was a part-time bailiff and often transported prisoners to and from other jurisdictions. He worked since 2016 as a part-time deputy after a career in law enforcement at the Madison County Sheriff’s Department where he had attained the rank of deputy chief. Dickson said Paar had a history of heart problems including open heart surgery.
The Ohio native had retired in the Big Buck community of Carroll County.
Funeral services are at the George A. Smith Funeral Home in Jackson. Carroll County officials will honor Paar and his service during the memorial, said Dickson. His body will be transported to Ohio, where his mother resides.
