Tater Town is the place to be this week as the Gleason Gazelles and the Gleason Community are gearing up for the 45th annual Tater Town Special. The theme for this year’s event is Tater Town Traditions. The 2018 grand marshal is Mrs. Doris Deck Owen. Mrs. Doris and her husband, Eric, are both lifelong members of the Gleason Community. Mrs. Doris encompasses all the qualities of a great community leader. She truly possesses a servant’s heart for the community and for the Lord. She loves the little town of Gleason and strives every day to ensure it flourishes. Join the Gazelles Saturday at 12 p.m. as they recognize Mrs. Doris for her unselfish service to the Gleason Community.
Other events include:
Tuesday Night: 80s Themed Block Party from 6:30-8:30 p.m. featuring an Escape Room, a DJ, Food Trucks, Cornhole, Costume Contest and Kids Activities.
Wednesday Night: Youth night will begin at 7 p.m. and feature Youth Bingo after a Devotional led by Chris Snider.
Thursday Night: Adult Bingo begins at 7 p.m. The cake auction takes place during intermission. The proceeds of the cake auction will go to the Gleason Community Benevolence Fund.
Friday Night: Sweet Potato Bake Off and the Community BBQ. Entries for the sweet potato bake off need to be at Gazelle grounds by 5 p.m. First place will receive $50 cash prize while the second and third place winners will receive a gift certificate to Simply Southern. The gates open for the community BBQ at 5:30 p.m., admission is $7. The event is all you can eat and will continue until food runs out. During this event there will be live entertainment by the band Flashback along with free play corn hole. The evening will end with a spectacular firework show sponsored by local businesses!
The annual JC Carey 5K Memorial Race kicks off the events on Saturday,September 1 at 7 a.m. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. in front of the school. The Junior Parade starts at 10 a.m. followed immediately by the Grand Parade. All horses will register at the Gleason Saddle Club prior to the parade. There is an Antique Tractor Show in front of the school following the parade. Avonlea will provide the entertainment after the parade at the Gazelle Grounds.There will be activities for kids and adults alike.
The week will conclude with a Community Wide Worship Service on Sunday, Sept. 2 hosted by the Gleason First United Methodist Church. The Gleason Gazelles extend a heartfelt invitation to you to join us for the 45th Annual Tater Town Special!
