Huntingdon head coach Eric Swenson said following the game that “execute and move on” was the mantra for Friday’s contest at county rival and district foe Bruceton Friday night. And execute they did on the way to a 55-0 district win over the Tigers.
Bruceton won the toss and deferred to the second half giving the Mustangs the ball to start the game. The Tigers attempted an onside hoping to catch the Mustangs off guard but they recovered the ball near midfield. Huntingdon went to work grinding out yardage on a 6-play drive resulting in a 17-yard Daquon Robinson touchdown just over three minutes into the game at the 8:40 mark of the first quarter. Extra point by Cole Edwards was good for a 7-0 Huntingdon lead.
Bruceton’s first possession was short-lived fumbling the ball on first down with Huntingdon recovering deep in Tiger territory. The Mustangs went right back to work grinding out the yards and scoring again on a 17-yard TD run around the left side by quarterback Hunter Ensley with 5:59 left in the first quarter. Edward’s PAT again was good for a 14-0 lead.
The Tigers settled down on their second possession and got a good offensive drive going after the kickoff starting at their own 29 and getting the ball into Mustang territory before Brandon Lawton ended that drive with an interception at the 20 and ran it back to the Mustang 31 before he was brought down.
Huntingdon went on the march again driving deep into Bruceton territory aided by a 45-yard run by Robinson getting the Mustangs to the Bruceton 12 when the first quarter ended. A little over a minute into the second quarter Robinson scored from 13 yards out for Huntingdon’s third score of the night. Edwards hit his third straight extra point for a 21-0 lead.

Bruceton went three plays and out on their next series and had a bad punt that had the Mustangs starting their fourth possession at the Tiger 39. Seven plays later, Daquon Robinson had his second TD and the Mustang’s fourth score of the night on a 1-yard TD. Extra point was good for a 28-0 lead with 6:17 left in the half.
The Tigers managed to move the ball some through the air and keep the ball away from Huntingdon aided by a fumble recovery on a punt by Bruceton’s Thomas Crews. Huntingdon didn’t touch the ball again until the last play of the first half after stopping the Tigers on a fourth down play.
Bruceton took the second half kickoff but turned the ball over with Huntingdon’s Konner Pearson recovering at the Tiger 22 yard line. 2 plays later Hunter Ensley had his second touchdown of the night with the extra point good for a 35-0 lead with 9:32 left in the third quarter. With the mercy rule now in effect, the game clock ran the rest of the contest and both teams began getting younger players some playing time.
Bruceton continued to have difficulty moving the football facing a stifling Mustang defense and dealing with some in-game injuries along the way. Huntingdon’s second offense put a score on the board with 36 seconds left in the third quarter on a 2-yard touchdown by sophomore Ethan Reliford. Extra point was no good leaving the score 41-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final quarter, pretty much everyone on both benches got into the contest with Huntingdon scoring twice more. Freshman Aden Hutcherson burst up the middle for a 45-yard score with 7:11 to play with the extra point good for a 48-0 lead. Hutcherson scored again on their final possession on a 21-yard run with 26 seconds left in the contest. Extra point was good for the final score of 55-0.
The Mustangs play host to Camden while Bruceton regroups and faces Houston County.
