Huntingdon, West Carroll Split Games

HUNTINGDON (January 15) — Huntingdon played host to West Carroll in key District 11A contests last Tuesday night. The Fillies tallied a win in their contest while the War Eagles avenged an early December loss to the Mustangs.
Fillies 69, Lady War Eagles 40
The girls contest was close during the first quarter and part of the second. The Fillies went up 4-0 in the first 1:30 of the game. Points came slow for the Lady War Eagles as Huntingdon built a 10-4 lead with three minutes left the in the quarter. West Carroll found the mark and put up 7 points in the last two minutes but Huntingdon finished the opening quarter with a 17-11 lead.
West Carroll opened the second quarter with two quick baskets making it a 17-16 contest before the Fillies blew the game open with four back to back three pointers to take a 29-16 lead halfway through the period. The Lady War Eagles went ice cold scoring only one point in the last six minutes of the half. Meanwhile, Huntingdon added 11-more points after the 12-0 run to lead 40-17 at the half.
The Fillies outscored West Carroll 16-11 during the third quarter to take a commanding 56-28 lead at the end of three periods. Both teams played their benches in the fourth period with a running clock with Huntingdon outscoring West Carroll 13-12 to reach a 69-40 final.
Four Fillies were in double figures led by Alli Jones with 17 points. Addison Postlethwait had 13 points while Adyn Swenson and Tyasia Reed added 11 and 10 points respectively. Macey Culbreath had 8 points, Brooke Butler had 6 points, Kamaya Harris and Kenadie Gibson chipped in 2 points each for the Fillies.
West Carroll was led by Macey Cunningham with 11 points followed by Amaya Thompson with 7 points and Katie Holt with 6 points. Tatum Keymon and Denver Brooks added 4 and 3 points respectively while Gracie Cunningham, Alyssa Butler, Octavia Jones, and Kaylee Butler all had 2 points each. Erin Norman chipped in a point for the Lady War Eagles.

War Eagles 54, Mustangs 42
The boys contest was tabbed to be one that would help determine the district boys’ race and it did sort of. The two teams two teams got after each other with a lot of fouls especially in the first half. Both teams swapped leads for the first five minutes of the first period until the game was tied 8-8 with three minutes left. Huntingdon’s Nik Bynum broke the tie with a three-pointer giving the Mustangs an 11-8 lead with a minute to play and that turned out to be the score at the end of one period.
The Mustangs kept the lead for the first five minutes of the second period until West Carroll took the lead on a pair of free throws followed by a three-pointer on the next possession giving the War Eagles a 20-16 edge with three minutes to play until halftime. West Carroll maintained the lead the remainder of the period taking a 25-20 lead into halftime.
The War Eagles came out hot in the third period scoring 7 unanswered points taking a 32-20 lead with 5:30 left in the period. Huntingdon spent the rest of the period playing catchup and trimmed West Carroll’s lead to 38-32 heading into the final period.
Both teams got hot in the final period but the War Eagles were just a little hotter opening the lead back to nine points at 47-38 with a little over three minutes to play in the game. West Carroll finished the contest with a 54-42 win giving them a regular season split with the Mustangs.
The War Eagles had two in double figures led by Aaron Heckert with 17 points and Tyson Keymon with 11 points including three 3-pointers. Luke Moore had 8 points, Dawson Hardwick had 6 points, Jalen Anglin had 5 points, Jeremiah Bryant had 4 points, and Josh Clark had 3 points for West Carroll.
Huntingdon was led by Xavier White with 11 points followed by Dallas Willis and Kaleel Bailey with 8 points each. Nick Bynum added 7 points along with Hunter Ledsinger with 5 points and Kameron Gordon with 3 points for the Mustangs.
