Keller Smith Awarded Pinnacle of Excellence

HUNTINGDON — Huntingdon’s town council approved a resolution tentatively approving the awarding of contracts for Sewer System Improvements and any additional funds necessary to complete the 2018 Community Development Block Grant. Bids were originally received May 21 but were over budget and rejected by the council. A mini-rebid was conducted with the rebids being received July 11. Miller Construction was the low bidder with a $291,117. The project engineer recommended awarding the contract to Miller Construction contingent on approval from the State of Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development. Huntingdon will provide $25,117 in additional cash funds to cover construction costs.
Mayor Dale Kelley and the council awarded the Pinnacle of Excellence award to Huntingdon Middle School Student Keller Smith for his recent participation in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC. He is the youngest to ever receive the award. He is the son of Scott and Shauna Smith.
The council approved a request from Shawn Henslee for the use of Edwards Park ball fields for coed softball league. The request is for use of the park every other Saturday from March 2020 until October 2020. Proceeds from the softball league are going to assist Volunteer Fire Departments in Carroll County.

The council also approved a request from BOOTERS Soccer for the use of the soccer field at Kelley Sports Complex on Saturdays from August 3, – October 5, 2019. The request is for a 14U coed soccer team to host other towns for matches during the 2019 fall season.
Mayor Kelley announced the Bassmaster Junior Championship Fishing Tournament will be held at the Carroll County Thousand Acre Recreational Lake on Tuesday, August 6 and Wednesday, August 7 with weigh-in at Billy Cary Park. According to the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, the combined economic impact to the county during the first five years that the event has been held at the lake is estimated to be around $900,000. The Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School Championship will be held on Kentucky Lake in Paris on August 8th-10th.
With no further announcements or action, the council adjourned until their next meeting August 13th at 6 p.m.
