McKenzie, Bethel to Host Table Tennis Tournament

Posted

McKENZIE — The City of McKenzie and Bethel University are hosting a non-sanctioned world table tennis tournament on August 24. McKenzie native Chris Edlin is spearheading the event, which will attract competitors from throughout the states and even China.
Forty competitors will compete at the Crisp Arena at Bethel University. They will compete in the highest-paying non-sanctioned tournament with the winner receiving $1,000 prize money. A total of $3,000 will be awarded during the tournament.
It is an all-day event, Edlin told members of the McKenzie Rotary Club.
It coincides with McKenzie’s Fried Food and Sweet Tea Festival.

The event originated from an idea of the city. Chris Edlin worked temporarily with the city as a part-time Parks Department employee and decided table tennis is an activity in which many can participate.
The event started on each Monday with a few persons participated and has grown. The weekly event is each Tuesday, 6 p.m., at the Farmers Market. The group now hosts an annual championship.
Edlin said participants in the August event will compete in various categories.
Edlin said the tournament is a friendly atmosphere hosted in a small town during its annual festival. World-class players will participate.
Spectators are welcome for a small admission price.
