HUNTINGDON (November 1) — The McKenzie High School Rebel and Lady Rebel golf teams celebrated an exceptional season with a banquet Thursday night at Mallard’s Restaurant, joined by family, friends and other supporters.
The evening began with Tim McBride welcoming all, then senior Ben Austin delivered a blessing before guests enjoyed a delicious banquet-style meal.
After dessert, McBride continued the program by thanking many, including Annette French, Josephine Wright, Hollye Rider and Mona Batchelor for various contributions to the banquet; The Banner, WHDM and Jim Steele for media coverage; and Mallard’s.
He then provided some statistics, beginning with the performance of the seniors over four years.
Over that period, the Lady Rebels accrued a record of 128-44-3, a winning percentage of 73. They earned two district championships, two region championships and two state tournament appearances, finishing sixth in 2017 and fourth in 2018.
The Rebels tallied a record of 175-40 for a winning percentage of 81. They earned a district championship, two region championships and two state tournament appearances, finishing fifth in 2017 and seventh in 2018.
The senior boys and girls combined for a four-year record of 303-84-3, a winning percentage of 78.
Next, Coach Larry Joe Smith came to the podium. He thanked the “wonderful crowd” for being there and pointed out all of the hardware on the table in front of him. He said, “I’m pretty proud of what these student athletes have accomplished this year.”

He thanked the parents for their support and Stan Welch for his help training the golfers.
He then recognized the players, presenting each with a golf flag reading, “Rebel Golf – 2018 State Tournament.” Seniors also received their individual graphic banners.
Coach Smith listed each golfer’s average score and season-low score, noting that each returning player improved his or her score from the previous year.
The seniors thanked the coach and presented him with gifts.
McBride then recited a poem he had written about the season titled, “The Repeat.”
Coach Smith surprised McBride by presenting him with a plaque that read, “Given with heartfelt thanks to Tim McBride for his tireless work as our Communications Director, his exquisite skills as a wordsmith, and his unwavering efforts to continue to bring Rebel Golf to the limelight.”
The banquet then ended, but guests lingered for photos and to reminisce on the season.
Lady Rebel golfers were seniors Mallory Cole, Julie French and Olivia Wright; junior Whitley Smith; sophomore Maggie Glass; and freshmen Juleyanne Weatherford and Jayden Tucker.
Rebel golfers were seniors Will McBride and Ben Austin; junior Lane Horton; sophomores Johnathan Moore, Nathan Nanney, RC Wilson and Logan Green; and freshman Colin McLearen.
